Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Incubus Lyrics

To get through this thing called life, electric word life
That means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here to tell you there's something else, the afterworld
A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night
So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby
'Cause in this life things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life you're on your own
And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy, punch a higher floor
If you don't like the world you're living in
Take a look around you, at least you got friends
You see I called my old lady for a friendly word
She picked up the phone, dropped it on the floor
Ah, ah, is all I heard
Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?
Oh no, let's go, let's go crazy, let's get nuts
Let's look for the purple banana till they put us in the truck, let's go
We're all excited but we don't know why
Maybe it's 'cause we're all gonna die
And when we do, yeah what's it all for?
You better live now before the grim reaper comes knocking on your door
Tell me, are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?
Oh, no let's go, let's go crazy, let's get nuts
Look for the purple banana til' they put us in the truck, let's go
C'mon baby, let's get nuts, yeah let's go crazy
Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?
Oh no, let's go, go crazy, let's go crazy
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Dr. Everything'll be alright
Gonna make everything go wrong
Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill
Hang tough children, he's come, he's come, he's come
Take me away
The lyrics to Incubus's song 12 Let's Go Crazy are an anthem to embracing life and making the most of it. The song begins with the singer addressing a group of people, suggesting they are gathered together to face the challenges and joys of life. The phrase "electric word life" is used to illustrate the power and energy of life that can be difficult to control. The singer then assures the crowd that there is something beyond the physical world--the "afterworld" where there is never-ending happiness and sunshine.
The singer urges the crowd to make the most of their time in the physical world by turning to their mind as a source of strength, rather than relying on external factors like time. In this way, the singer suggests that life is hard, but it is possible to overcome those struggles by focusing on the power of the mind. As the song progresses, the metaphor of the elevator represents the ups and downs of life--when it tries to bring you down, you should fight back by going crazy and taking risks.
The song concludes with a sense of urgency--life is short, so you need to make the most of it while you can. The idea that we're all going to die creates a sense of community among the crowd, pushing them to embrace life and enjoy it together. Overall, the lyrics encourage the listener to take risks, embrace their inner strength, and fight back against the struggles of life.
