Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Anything
Incubus Lyrics

Feeling cheaper than usual
I guess you could say that I'm on sale
So take what you can while you can
Shop now intensive
I could snap at any moment
And I might feel more expensive
Oh
[Chorus]
I don't owe anything to you
I don't owe anything to you
You don't you know me half as well as you think you do
I don't owe anything
Anything to you
I met the mirror
The plastic hanging from my ear
And in that moment I went unfazed
So take what you can while you can
Less conscious only means more gold
I could snap at any moment and remember
I was not born to be sold
[Chorus: x2]
The lyrics of the song "Anything" by Incubus reflect a feeling of devaluation and a desire for independence. Through the metaphor of being on sale or being sold, the singer expresses an insecurity about their value and a concern that others will take advantage of them. This is reflected in lines such as "Feeling cheaper than usual" and "Shop now intensive." However, the singer also hints at a potential for change or growth, with the line "And I might feel more expensive," suggesting that they are not resigned to being undervalued.
The second half of the song shifts the focus to the singer's relationship with themselves. They look in the mirror and see "plastic hanging from [their] ear," indicating a sense of artificiality or inauthenticity. Despite this, the singer is unfazed and suggests that being less conscious (or self-aware) might lead to greater financial gain ("Less conscious only means more gold"). Ultimately, though, the singer rejects the idea of being sold and asserts their independence, proclaiming "I was not born to be sold."
Overall, "Anything" explores themes of self-worth, independence, and the tension between financial success and personal values. The song highlights the pressure to conform to societal norms and the desire to break free from these constraints.
