Aqueous Transmission
Incubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oars freed from their homes long ago
Lying face up on the floor
Of my vessel
I marvel at the stars
And feel my heart overflow
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Two weeks without my lover
I'm in this boat alone
Floating down a river named emotion
Will I make it back to shore?
Or drift into the unknown
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
I'm building an antenna
Transmissions will be sent
When I am through
Maybe we can meet again
Further down the river
And share what we both discovered
Then revel in the view
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
Further down the river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
I'm floating down a river
The song "Aqueous Transmission" by Incubus tells the story of a person who is floating down a river all alone, feeling disconnected and yearning for his lover's presence. The person is lying on the floor of a vessel, with oars freed from their homes, indicating the loss of control in life. In this calm and serene setting, the person looks up at the stars and feels a sense of wonder and love, which helps him to reconnect with his emotions.
As the person floats further down the river, he is still alone and struggling to find his way back to his lover. The river becomes a metaphor for his internal state of mind where emotions are flowing like water. The person is hoping to find his way back to his lover that he left behind, but he has no idea if he will ever see her again.
Towards the end of the song, the person begins to build an antenna, indicating his desire to reconnect and communicate with his lover, despite the distance. The person hopes that they will meet again down the river and share their experiences with each other. The song has an overarching theme of longing, loss, and the desire to connect emotionally with others.

I don't know if anyone else thinks this, but I've always thought this song was a metaphor for life after a tough break up.
"Two weeks without my lover. I'm in this boat alone. Floating down a river named 'emotion'."
And
"Maybe we can meet again further down the river" I hope we get together again later in life. "And share what we both discovered" and share how we changed for the better during our time apart.
I fucking love this song. Aqueous Transmission, Digital Bath (Acoustic Version), and Be Quiet and Drive (Acoustic Version) make me melt whenever I listen.

I don't believe this song is sad or that it suggests "giving up" but instead that it describes a peaceful surrender to the flow of life, why fight against the current when you can lay back and enjoy where it takes you? There's always some sadness in endings, but freedom in letting go.
