Dig
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We all have a weakness
But some of ours are easy to identify
Look me in the eye
And ask for forgiveness
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again
Yes, you are my friend
We all have something that digs at us
At least we dig each other

So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone, oh oh oh

We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try
We all have someone that digs at us
At least we dig each other

So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone
Oh, each other
When everything else is gone

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Oh
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone
Oh, each other (sing this song)
When everything else is gone

Oh, each other
When everything else is gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Dig" by Incubus are about the power of friendship and the willingness to support each other through difficult times. The song opens with the line "We all have a weakness" which suggests that everyone has something that causes them pain, but some are easier to identify than others. The lyric "Look me in the eye / And ask for forgiveness" implies that there may have been some discord in the past, but the singer and their friend have made a pact to move on and not dwell on their mistakes. They are reminding each other that they are friends and will always have each other's backs.

The second verse continues with the theme of weaknesses and how some can be more insidious, like a sickness that attaches and multiplies. The idea that "we all have someone that digs at us" underscores the idea that the people closest to us can sometimes be the source of our pain. But in the end, the song is about the power of human connection and how we need each other to get through the hard times.

The chorus repeats the idea that if one person turns into someone else (perhaps as a result of their weakness or sickness), their friend will act as a "clever medicine" and remind them that they have each other. The repetition of the line "dig me up from under what is covering the better part of me" suggests that the singer is aware that they have flaws, but their friend's support is helping to bring out the best in them.

My son would have been 41 years old today. Sadly he passed away 7/19/07 at 9:11 am. Incubus was one of his favorite bands. I'm sitting by his memorial tree and paying tribute to him by listening to some of his favorite tunes. He would love that. Miss him dearly. πŸ˜˜πŸ™

That's a beautiful way to honor his life.

Song is 18 years old and still evokes the same feelings as when I heard it for the first time. Hello, 2024. Thanks, Icubus, for staying with me.
