Dig (Recorded Live from the
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We all have a weakness
Some of ours are easier to identify
Look me in the eye

And ask for forgiveness
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again
Yes, you are my friend
We all have something that digs at us
At least we dig each other
So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me

Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone
Oh, oh, oh

We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try

We all have someone that digs at us
At least we dig each other, oh
So when sickness churns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me

Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone
Oh, each other when everything else is gone

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me

Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone

Oh, each other (sing this song) when everything else is gone
Oh, each other, when everything else is gone

Overall Meaning

The song Dig by Incubus is about the nature of human weakness and how friendship can help us overcome those weaknesses. The lyrics speak to the fact that everyone struggles at times and has weaknesses that they are not proud of, yet it is essential to have loving and understanding friends that will be there to support and encourage us at such times.

The first verse suggests that everyone has a weakness, but some are more apparent than others. The singer, however, tries to bond with his friend, promising to make a pact never to allow their weaknesses to come between them or address the subject of weakness again.

In the second verse, the lyrics highlight that everyone has a problem that eats away and makes the person feel angry and full of hate. However, the singer communicates that it is comforting to have someone else that understands what another individual is going through in such an instance.

The chorus, 'Sing this song, remind me that we'll always have each other when everything else is gone,' emphasizes the importance of friendship in getting through tough times. We often feel vulnerable in the face of our weaknesses and need people to remind us that we are never alone.

The way Brandon sings "the me from YESTERDAY" always hits me right in the chest. One of, if not THE best vocalists of all time.

Bodhi the Bodhisattva

Lane Staley was a magician. Scott Weiland the melody madman is up in that tier as well to me.

Eric

He's good. No Steve Perry or Freddie but in his genre he is great

Mike Patton 1st off. FNM is the band that created the sound and structure that Incubus is doing. 2nd Chris Cornell was another do-all vocalist and ahead of the game. I'm not taking anything from Boyd. He has a beautiful voice and the stuff of ACLOTM and Light Grenades is great. But there are vocalists than not only beat him to the punch but defined his career.
