Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Favorite Things
Incubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and I know everything you hate in me.
Fill me up with over-pious badgerings,
to throw them up, oh, one of my favorite things.
Remember all the lessons fed to me?
Me the young sponge, so ready to agree.
Years have gone; I recognize the walking dead,
now aware that I'm alive and way ahead.
are my favorite things.
And I'm so happy.
I see you looking, I know that you're thinking
that I'll never go anywhere.
The things that I've done and the things
that I've seen, I don't really expect you to care.
The opening lines of Incubus's song Favorite Things imply introspection and self-reflection. The singer is contemplating their "soul's sovereignty," suggesting they are examining their innermost self and what they stand for. The next line, "and I know everything you hate in me," suggests that the singer is aware of others' opinions about them and what aspects of their personality are disliked. However, instead of changing who they are to please others, the singer wants to be "filled up with over-pious badgerings" so they can "throw them up," implying that they are not interested in internalizing any negative feedback they receive. Instead, the act of rejecting others' opinions has become "one of [their] favorite things."
The second half of the verse shifts to a reflection on the past. The singer remembers being a "young sponge" who was eager to agree with what they were taught. However, with time, they have become aware of the "walking dead," those who are merely going through the motions without really living. The singer implies that they are different from those people, as they are "alive and way ahead." The chorus then speaks directly to those who dislike the singer. The things that bother those individuals are, in fact, the singer's "favorite things," suggesting that the singer has accepted who they are, even if it is counter to what others expect or want. The lines "And I'm so happy / I see you looking, I know that you're thinking / that I'll never go anywhere" suggest that the singer is content with their life and not interested in trying to please others or meet their expectations.
