Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Hold Me Down
Incubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The trees are orange and brown
I'm not afraid to leave this goddamn town
I've had enough
I'm gone, I won't look back
I walk awhile, along the rail road track
I'm obliged to you babe, but this place you see, is trying to hold me down
I am off to anywhere but here (hold me down)
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down
The others, beware of what they say
Take your pill, and remember to pray
I've had enough
There's too much to live down
I need to break out of this goddamn town
I'm obliged to you babe, but this place you see, is trying to hold me down
I want more than you can offer (hold me down)
I am tired of all the if's and when's (hold me down)
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down
I need more than you can offer (hold me down)
I am off to anywhere but here (hold me down)
I'm still walking 'cause nobody can hold me down
Hold me down
Whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa
Ooh
Whoa, whoa
Ooh yeah
Yeah
I want more than you can offer
I am off to anywhere but here
I keep walking so nobody can hold me down
Hold me down
Hold me down
Hold me down
The song “Hold Me Down” by Incubus is a beautifully written and emotional piece that talks about the struggles of not having control over your life and the constant fight to break free from a mundane routine. The lyrics speak of the road being long, the trees being orange and brown that represent change and transition, and the courage to let go and move on from a past that is holding you back. The singer is quite clear that he wants more than what he has and is unafraid to take risks and leave everything behind to explore the unknown.
The song also talks about the feeling of being trapped in a situation that is suffocating and draining you. But the singer is determined to break free and live life on their own terms. It is a song about the power of self-belief and determination to achieve your goals and live life to the fullest. The phrase “hold me down” isn’t being used as a literal act of someone trying to hold someone down, but rather an embodiment of the feeling of being restrained by the limitations of life.
Overall, the song has a powerful message, and the lyrics are relatable to anyone who has struggled with change, moving forward, or feeling trapped in their current situation. It encourages people to have faith in themselves and to believe that they can achieve their desires.
