Monuments and Melodies
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My hands are trembling
And my eyes are on fire
This house is crumbling
Left brain, left out on the wire

You make me happy
You magnify my better half
You make me certain
That all I have today is your photograph

My past is perilous
And each scar I bear sings
Monuments to where I have been
And melodies to where I am going

You make me happy
You magnify my better half
You make me certain
That all I have today is your photograph

When will I see you again?
A still life can only go so far

I need you in front of me
Saying my name
Saying to me
Saying to me
Saying to me
I want you the way you are
The way you are

You make me happy
You magnify my better half
You make me certain
That all I have today is your photograph

You make me happy

You make me happy
You make me happy

Overall Meaning

In "Monuments and Melodies," Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd sings about the transformative power of love and the importance of a significant other in his life. The song starts with Boyd expressing his emotional state - his hands are trembling and his eyes are on fire, and he feels like the house around him is crumbling. He describes himself as feeling left brain, left out on the wire, implying that he is emotionally overwhelmed and disconnected from the rational part of his mind.

However, the song takes a positive turn when Boyd starts to sing about his partner. He states that his partner makes him happy and magnifies his better half, meaning that they bring out the best in each other. In a world where Boyd's past is "perilous," and each scar he bears sings a monument to where he has been, his partner's love acts as a melody guiding him to where he will go in the future.

Finally, Boyd articulates his need to see his partner again. He tells them that a still life can only go so far - he needs more than a photograph to sustain him. He needs his partner's physical presence, to hear them say his name and love him for who he truly is. The song ends with Boyd repeating the line "You make me happy," as a declaration of love and gratitude to his significant other.
