Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Anyone who does will end up smelling
Knowing this, why do I defy?
'Cause my inner voice is yelling
There is a fist pressing against
Anyone who thinks something compelling
Our intuit we're taught to deny
And our soul we're told is for selling
Get out from under them
Resist and multiply
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
Get out from under them
Resist, unlearn, defy
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
To resist is to piss in the wind
Anyone who does will end up smelling
Knowing this, why do I defy?
Because my inner voice is yelling
There is a fist pressing against
Anyone who thinks something compelling
Our intuit we're taught to deny
And our soul we're told is for selling
Get out from under them
Resist and multiply
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
Get out from under them
Resist, unlearn, defy
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
See the sky (see the sky), see the sky (see the sky), see the sky (see the sky)
Resist and multiply (resist and multiply)
Resist and multiply
Get out from under them
Resist and multiply
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
Get out from under them
Resist, unlearn, defy
Get out from under precipice and see the sky
See the sky, see the sky, see the sky
This section of Out From Under by Incubus is a call to action for individuals to resist societal pressures and expectations. The opening lines of the section are a metaphor that, when someone tries to resist or go against these pressures, they will only end up causing harm or backlash to themselves. However, the singer asks themselves why they continue to defy societal norms despite the potential consequences. The answer lies within his intuition and inner voice, telling him to stray from the path that society has paved.
The next line, "There is a fist pressing against anyone who thinks something compelling," is a poignant commentary on the marginalization and oppression of individuals who have radical or different ideas that go against the norm. The verse states that society teaches us to deny our intuition, often in exchange for profit or societal validation. The singer urges individuals to get out from under this oppression and encourages them to resist, unlearn, and defy the oppressive forces in their lives. The final line of the section, "Get out from under the precipice and see the sky," serves as a metaphorical call for individuals to break free from their constrictive environment and experience the freedom and possibilities that await them.
