Rogues
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm keeping an eye on the future
An eye on the past
And the present in my pocket
Just in case I need a door
Into a brave new world where
All solutions end up with my head
Buried to my neck in sand
Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion
Hats off and applause to rogues and evolution
The ripple effect is too good not to mention
If you're not affected, you're not paying attention
It's too good, too good
Not to have an effect

I'm keeping an eye on the pulse
An ear to the track and penance in a locket
I'm dropping from the highest floor
When it hits ground I watch it smash to pieces
Songs of liberation echo from the dust, the dust

Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion
Hats off and applause to rogues and evolution
The ripple effect is too good not to mention
If you're not affected, you're not paying attention
It's too good, too good
Not to have an effect

Enough, enough, enough, enough, enough
Enough, enough, enough, enough, enough

Bowing down to disillusion
Hats off and applause to rogues and evolution
The ripple effect is too good not to mention

If you're not affected, you're not paying attention
It's too good, too good, too good

Overall Meaning

In Incubus's song "Rogues," the lyrics suggest the sense of feeling torn between the past and the future, whilst standing in the present, ready to step out at any moment. The phrase "just in case I need a door" implies that the present remains an escape or a way out of the chaos, should it all become too much. However, the singer's final destination lies in "a brave new world where all solutions end up with my head buried to my neck in sand." This line suggests that the singer is aware of the risks that come with progressing towards a "new world," and they might end up burying their head in the sand of ignorance.

The second half of the song communicates the idea of the ripple effect and the power of change. The lyrics highlight how we should appreciate the impact of change no matter how small, as it will inevitably have an effect. The lines, "If you're not affected, you're not paying attention" suggests that those who try to resist, or ignore, the winds of change do so at their own peril. The song's title "Rogues" is used to applaud those who take a less conventional path, marked by rebellion and challenge the status quo.

Still true.. yet in retrospect, signaling the end of something great. The keys sound amazing here.. but now the keys have replaced the psychedelic nature of Kilmore’s sound effects through his tables. Even something as simple as his tables in Wish You Were Here.. yea he would be doing more if he weren’t playing keys, but would he be contributing more? Negative. Kilmore is a DJ, not a keyboard player.
