Stellar
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are stellar

Meet me in outer space
We could spend the night
Watch the earth come up
I've grown tired of that place
Won't you come with me?
We could start again

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do
How do you do it?
It's better than I ever knew, uh

Meet me in outer space
I will hold you close
If you're afraid of heights
I need you to see this place
It might be the only way
That I can show you how it feels to be inside of you

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do
How do you do it?
It's better than I ever knew, uh
How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do

I do, oh, uh-uh-uh
You are stellar
You are stellar

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do
How do you do it?
It's better than I ever knew, uh
How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Incubus's "Stellar" portray the idea of starting anew with a loved one, away from the monotony of everyday life. The first verse invites the listener to meet in outer space, away from the confines of Earth. The sense of detachment from reality is further emphasized with the line "I've grown tired of that place." The chorus expresses a sense of wonder and amazement at the feeling of being with this person. The repetition of "How do you do it?" highlights the singer's amazement and inability to comprehend the strength of the emotional connection between them. The second verse hints at the possibility of fear, with the line "If you're afraid of heights," but ultimately asserts the importance of sharing this experience together. The song concludes with the declaration that the other person is "stellar" in their ability to make the singer feel the way they do.

Overall, "Stellar" can be interpreted as a love song that reflects the longing for a connection deep enough to escape the mundanity of everyday life. It presents the possibility of transcendence both physically and emotionally and the sense of awe in the face of the strength of the connection.

At my first job this kid I worked with loved it every time I played this song. He requested it every shift. Years later he died in a car crash on the way to his wedding, because of a drunk driver. To this day this songs says dear to me as a memory of a lost friend.

Just got back from seeing them in concert. Brandon sounds exactly like he did over 20 years ago. And still gorgeous as hell. Dare I say, it was a stellar show.
