Summer Romance
Incubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm home alone tonight.
Full moon illuminates my room, and sends my mind aflight.
I think I was dreaming up some thoughts that were seemingly possible, with you.
So I call you on the tin can phone.
We rendezvous at a quarter-two, and make sure we're alone.
Think I've found a way for you and I to finally fly free.

When we get there, we're gonna fly so far away,
Making sure to laugh; while we experience anti-gravity.
Anti gravity x2.

For years, I kept it to myself.
Now potentialities are bound, and living under my shelf.
Simply choose your destination from the diamond canopy, and we'll be there.
So I call you on the tin can phone.

We rendezvous at a quarter-two, and make sure we're alone.
I may have found the way for you and I to finally be free

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Incubus’ song “Summer Romance” describe the feeling of solitude and reflection that comes with being alone during a full moon. The singer seems to be lost in thought, dreaming up possibilities to share with another person. The imagery of the full moon and flight suggest a desire to be released from earthly constraints and to experience something transcendental. His thoughts turn to a particular person, and he reaches out to them through the “tin can phone,” a childhood toy used to communicate over distance.

When the two meet, they plan to “fly so far away” and “experience anti-gravity.” This could be taken literally or metaphorically, as they escape their mundane lives and enter a state of euphoria. The image of laughter adds to the sense of joy and freedom they seek. The second verse suggests that the singer has been holding back this desire for a long time, but now feels empowered to share it with another person. The “diamond canopy” could represent the infinite possibilities of the universe, or simply a beautiful place where they can escape reality. The singer again calls the person on the tin can phone, suggesting a nostalgia for simpler times.

Overall, “Summer Romance” is a song about longing for connection and transcendence. The imagery of flight, anti-gravity, and the diamond canopy all suggest a desire to escape earthly limitations and experience something extraordinary. The use of the tin can phone as a means of communication adds a nostalgic touch, suggesting a yearning for youthful innocence and simplicity.

lol oh trust me the world knows. However, they didn’t get BIG until the next album. If you were referring to this album and the one before it “fungus amongus” I’ll agree most people are missing out. Incubus now though is huuuuuuuuge. They are SO good. This so my favorite album though for sure

I know it's been said so many times before but Incubus is criminally underrated in my humble opinion. The instrumentation and artistry, especially on their old work (this being an great example) is just phenomenal. Blending and mixing genres is far from a new concept but rarely, many can make it sound unique and refreshing and excellent
