Ready For Love
India Arie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am ready for love
Why are you hiding from me
I'd quickly give my freedom
To be held in your captivity

I am ready for love
All of the joy and the pain
And all the time that it takes
Just to stay in your good grace
Lately I've been thinking
Maybe you're not ready for me
Maybe you think I need to learn maturity
They say watch what you ask for
Cause you might receive
But if you ask me tomorrow
I'll say the same thing

I am ready for love
Would you please lend me your ear?
I promise I won't complain
I just need you to acknowledge I am here

If you give me half a chance
I'll prove this to you
I will be patient, kind, faithful and true
To a man who loves music
A man who loves art
Respect's the spirit world
And thinks with his heart

I am ready for love
If you'll take me in your hands
I will learn what you teach
And do the best that I can

I am ready for love
Here with an offering of
My voice
My Eyes
My soul
My mind

Tell me what is enough
To prove I am ready for love

I am ready

Overall Meaning

India Arie’s song Ready For Love talks about love, the anticipation for it, and the readiness to surrender to its hold. India Arie sings about her readiness, expressing her willingness to give up her freedom to be held captive by love. She desires to experience all the joy that it brings along with the inevitable pain that comes with it. In her lyrics, she acknowledges the time, patience, and commitment that love requires. She wants to be in good graces with her lover, and all she needs is for him to acknowledge her.

India Arie continues to assert her readiness for love, saying that she will prove herself to be patient, kind, faithful, and true to the man she loves - a man who loves music and art, respects the spirit world and thinks with his heart. She expresses her desire to be held, to be taken in her lover's hands, willing to learn and do everything to make it work. The chorus emphasizes the title of the song, continuously repeating, "I am ready for love," as if to reaffirm her readiness for love and that she will do everything in her power to show it.

In conclusion, the song captures the essence of the emotions experienced when one is ready to love. It portrays the need for someone to be patient, kind, committed, and willing to learn to make the relationship work. It's a call to love and be loved, a desire to be seen, heard, and acknowledged by the person they love.

My husband was abused physically and had cancer as a child, when i met him he stuttered so bad he could barely state his name. Today he speaks clearly, is cancer free, and a great father to both our children. The victory belongs to Jesus!!
