De Souza grew up in the conservative small town of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, where she and her artist mother, Kimberly Oberhammer, faced difficulty fitting in. De Souza's father is a Brazilian guitarist who was absent during much of her childhood. Her family moved to Asheville during her teen years.
With encouragement from her mother, De Souza started making music at age 9 and began self-producing her own recordings in 2016. Her first release was an EP titled Boys which was recorded in a friend's garage, followed by another EP titled Don't Cry Just Do in 2017. She self-released her first full-length album, I Love My Mom, in June 2018. Saddle Creek Records discovered the album and gave it a proper release in 2021. The album gained notice from journalists for De Souza's lyrics on taboo topics.
De Souza co-produced her second album, Any Shape You Take, with Brad Cook, who has also produced for Bon Iver and Waxahatchee. The album was released in August 2021 and was noted for De Souza's emotional singing and mastery of several different musical styles. De Souza toured with a full band featuring Dexter Webb (guitar), Zack Kardon (bass), and Avery Sullivan (drums). She also formed a neo-soul side project called Icky Bricketts with Ethan Baechtold.
In February 2023, De Souza announced via social media that her next album All of This Will End would release in April of that year. The announcement was paired with the release of a single called "Younger & Dumber" that same day.
Way Out

There're too many ghosts in here
I see you in colors, in reds and in oranges
But you can't color me in fear
Because there's nothing in the dark
You only see it in your head
Oh, there's nothing in the dark
And I'll never be the only thing you love
I'll never be the only thing you love
I'm looking for a way out, a way out, a way out
I don't wanna feel like this
I see you in colors and I want to be better but
I don't get no light in here and
If you wanna change, if you wanna change
I'll be here to love you, I'll be here to hold you through the pain
If you wanna change, if you wanna change
I'll be here to love you, no matter what shape you might take
I'll love you anyway
I'll love you anyway
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a light
I wanna be a, I wanna be a, I wanna be a, I wanna be
The opening lines of Indigo De Souza's "Way Out" express a yearning for escape. The repeated phrase "a way out" conveys the desperation of someone who feels trapped in a situation that is overwhelming them with ghosts, or memories, that are haunting them. However, the singer is still able to see the person they love in vibrant colors, suggesting that they are still holding onto hope despite the darkness they are experiencing.
The chorus of the song offers a reassuring message to the listener. The dark fears that seem so real are only illusions that exist in our minds. The line "there are no monsters underneath your bed" is a metaphor for the idea that the things we fear are often imagined and not grounded in reality. The second half of the chorus speaks to the singer's fear of not being enough for their loved one. They acknowledge that they will never be the only thing their partner loves, but they still want to be a necessary source of love and light in their life.
The second half of the song shifts focus to the singer's desire to be a light in their partner's life. They acknowledge that they are also struggling with the darkness, but they want to find a way to be a source of comfort for the one they love. The repetition of "I wanna be a light" underscores the singer's earnest desire to make a positive impact on their loved one's life, even if they themselves are still searching for a way out of their struggles.
Overall, "Way Out" is a song about the weight of internal struggles, the hope that still lingers despite these struggles, and the desire to connect with others even in times of darkness.
