Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.
Back Together Again
Indigo Girls Lyrics

Parting ain't just
People got to move on
People got to do what they must
And we're back together again
And I'm never gonna lose you as a friend
Growing up free
If you want to know the secret behind the smile
You got to ask a Tuesday's child
And we're back together again
And I'm never gonna lose you as a friend
Well I guess that highway got a hold of me
Thinking crazy thoughts like it was going to set me free
This ain't my place you know
This ain't my home
And I'm not going to feel right
Til you get us back behind the microphones
And we're back together again
And I'm never gonna lose you as a friend
No I'm never gonna lose you as a friend
No I'm never gonna lose you as a friend
The Indigo Girls' song "Back Together Again" expresses the sentiment of two friends reuniting after going their separate ways. The song recognizes that leaving people behind is never an easy task, but it is sometimes necessary to pursue one's dreams. The opening lines of the song "Leaving ain't fair you know, parting ain't just, people got to move on, people got to do what they must" highlight this struggle. Despite this, the singer is grateful to be reunited with their friend once again and vows to never lose them again.
The second verse of the song alludes to the idea of finding oneself and one's purpose in life. The Indigo Girls suggest that the process of growing up is not easy, but it entails finding freedom and happiness. The lyrics "Growing up free, growing up wild, if you want to know the secret behind the smile, you got to ask a Tuesday's child" imply that one must seek answers and meaning in life to find happiness. Ultimately, the singer expresses a deep longing to return to their former lives with their friend and get back to performing before an audience again.
Overall, the song highlights the importance of cherishing and maintaining friendships, even when separated by circumstances. It also suggests that finding oneself and one's purpose in life can be an ongoing process, but the journey is worthwhile.
