Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.

Dairy queen
There's just enough of you in me
For me to have this sympathy
And take it in stride
I know I had mine
And you were as kind
I am told
Ain't it funny how we lose one day
And a lifetime slips away
I'm looking back on us that way
Something I never thought I'd say
I take it in stride
I know I had mine
It was good for a time
I am told
It was good for a time
I am told
The love you gave was not for free
But the price was truly fair
I never felt so glad to be
So well spent and so beyond repair
I take it in stride
At least you were mine
If not for all time
Enough to hold
Or at least, enough for me to hold you
Now take good care that you are true
You said you found it hard to do
And find that bit of faith that sets you free
From having everything to prove
And you take it in stride
And know you've got mine
And it's good for a lifetime or more
Hey I love you more and more
Oh I love you more and more yeah
Indigo Girls' song "Dairy Queen" is a reflective track about two former lovers who have grown apart after one of them became an alcoholic. The lyrics describe how the singer has heard about her ex-partner's behavior at Dairy Queen, where she was drunk and mean. However, despite their bitter history, the song expresses a sense of empathy and understanding on the part of the singer. She acknowledges that she too had her flaws and that their relationship was good for a time. Despite its imperfections, the love they shared was not for free, but truly fair, and the singer feels glad to have experienced it.
As the song progresses, the singer advises her ex-lover to take good care and find faith that sets her free from feeling like she has anything left to prove. The song ends on a positive note with the singer expressing her love for her ex-lover, stating that she loves her more and more. Ultimately, "Dairy Queen" is a poignant reminder that even when love fades, empathy and understanding can remain.
