Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.
Digging For Your Dream

I felt a simple thing going past
Was it the day in old Georgia
When you were trying to take a bath?
She sees the Day Lily's Boston sign
And the tears spring to her eyes
You turn the car around and your headed back down that track
But the bottle of Jack sits on the counter like the devil she knows
And he beats her up and she fills her cup
With the ambers of a dying fire glow
See how she looked in her school year book
Her friends signed the margins all around
But would you stay in touch you know I miss you so much
I hope we get out of this town
Every day that you get up and force your cards
Playing your story in fits and starts
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down to the stream
And you bloody your hands digging for your dream
I went looking for the answers from someone I heard believes that life gets easier
And you learn how to breathe and you learn how to grieve your past
You study the masters and their books
Giving in to the barbs and hooks
Till you except it with grace when your true love doesn't last
Every day that you get up and force your cards
Playing your story in fits and starts
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down to the stream
And you bloody your hands digging for your dream
Every day that you get up and force your cards
You're playing your story in fits and starts
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down to the stream
And you bloody your hands digging for your dream
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down
Take your prospects and your pickaxe and you trudge down
"Digging for Your Dream" by Indigo Girls tells a powerful story of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. The opening lines reminisce about a simpler time, a memory that seems distant and unattainable. The singer then observes a sign for Day Lily's Boston as tears come to her eyes, suggesting that this place holds some special memory for her. The song then shifts focus to a woman who has had a heart attack but turns to Jack Daniels for comfort. The line "he beats her up and she fills her cup" is a poignant metaphor for how addiction and abuse can go hand in hand.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Every day that you get up and force your cards" emphasizing the importance of taking action and pushing forward through life's difficulties. The lyrics urge listeners to take their prospects and pickaxe and trudge down to the stream, alluding to the concept of digging for gold, which is metaphorical for chasing one's dreams. The final verse talks about seeking answers from those who have experience and studying to achieve mastery, even though the journey may be filled with barbs and hooks. Ultimately, the song's message is one of hope and resilience, suggesting that even in the darkest of times, we must continue to dig for our dreams no matter how difficult the journey may be.
