Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.

And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
You may not know why
Come on people now
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Some may come and some may go
We will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass yeah
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
If you hear the song we sing
You will understand
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Try to love one another right now
Try to love one another right now
Get Together by Indigo Girls is a song that promotes unity and love among people. The opening words, “Love is but a song we sing, And fear's the way we die,” states the importance of love over fear. Love is a prominent theme in the song because it is highlighted as the key to unlocking the potential for unity among people. The song suggests that people can make a change in the world, “You can make the mountains ring, Or make the angels cry,” but it is important to do it together, “Everybody get together,Try to love one another right now.” The song emphasizes the importance of being kind to others- "Smile on your brother”- and promotes the idea of individuals coming together to bring positive change. Every voice counts in this collective endeavor towards love and unity.
The lyrics hold a deep meaning about the current state of society and promote a message of togetherness, community involvement, and love being the driving force. It's a call to action for people to learn to love and be kind to one another. The idea of loving one another despite our differences is beautifully encapsulated in the lines, “If you hear the song we sing, You will understand, You hold the key to love and fear, All in your trembling hand, Just one key unlocks them both, It's there at your command.” Indigo Girls encourage us all to harmonize in the collective tune of unity and love, and that we can make a difference - one that’s powerful enough to bring about any differences in the world.
