Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.

Each to her rendition
Painted ourselves in a corner
Lost for ideas blindly fishing
For a compliment or kindness
Just to bring us into view
But you could not interpret me and I could not interpret you
I tried to make out some connection
We were at a loss for words
After all that we've been through
I could not see giving up
Despite the picture of our coffee growing colder in the cups
I want to say that underneath it all you are my friend
And the way that I fell for you I'll never fall that way again
I still believe despite our differences that what we have's enough
And I believe in you and I believe in love
So we went rolling on down through the years
Taking time off we could steal
Until the thief of things unreconciled
Stuck it's stick into the wheel
Now we're tumbling in a freefall
No one's gonna go unscathed
But it's not because you held back and its not how I behaved
I want to say that underneath it all you are my friend
And the way that I fell for you I'll never fall that way again
I still believe despite our differences that what we have's enough
I believe in you and I believe in love
There are avenues and supplements and books stacked on the shelf
Labyrinths of recovery in search of our best self
But most of what will happen now is way out of our hands
So just let it go and see where it lands
I want to say that underneath it all you are my friend
And the way that I fell for you I'll never fall that way again
I still believe despite our differences that what we have's enough
I believe in you and I believe in love
I believe in you and I believe in love
The Indigo Girls’s song “I Believe In Love” is a moving exploration of the complexity and endurance of love. The song tells the story of a deep, long-term relationship that has weathered challenges, misunderstandings and conflict. The lyrics convey a sense of struggle and uncertainty, as the two partners try to navigate their differences and reconcile their conflicting visions of life and love.
The opening lines of the song introduce the central tension: “When we tried to rework all of this / Each to her rendition / Painted ourselves in a corner / Lost for ideas blindly fishing.” Here, we see the two partners struggling to communicate and understand each other, despite their best efforts. They feel trapped and frustrated, unable to find their way out of the corner they have painted themselves into. The sense of struggle and desperation is reinforced in the next lines: “For a compliment or kindness / Just to bring us into view / But you could not interpret me and I could not interpret you.”
Despite these challenges, the couple perseveres, clinging to their love and commitment to each other. The second verse of the song recalls a time when they were struggling to connect, but still couldn’t give up on each other: “I remember that cold morning when the trees were black with birds / I tried to make out some connection / We were at a loss for words / After all that we've been through / I could not see giving up / Despite the picture of our coffee growing colder in the cups.” The verse evokes a sense of shared history and deep emotional connection, even amidst difficulty and uncertainty.
Throughout the song, the Indigo Girls convey a sense of hope and determination in the face of adversity. They acknowledge the inevitability of conflict and the limitations of human understanding, but ultimately choose to believe in the power of love. As the song nears its end, we see the couple trying to find peace and acceptance amidst the confusion and uncertainty of life: “There are avenues and supplements and books stacked on the shelf / Labyrinths of recovery in search of our best self / But most of what will happen now is way out of our hands / So just let it go and see where it lands.” Here, we see them releasing their hold on control, and choosing to embrace the unknown, together.

I recall a specific moment in time
I tried to make out some connection

Until the thief of things unreconciled
Until the unsolved issues and conflicts caught up with us
Stuck it's stick into the wheel
Causing a significant obstacle in our relationship
Now we're tumbling in a freefall
Now we're falling uncontrollably
No one's gonna go unscathed
We'll both be affected by the consequences
But it's not because you held back and its not how I behaved
But it's not due to either of us holding back or behaving poorly
There are avenues and supplements and books stacked on the shelf
There are resources available for self-improvement
Labyrinths of recovery in search of our best self
Complex and challenging paths to follow to become our best selves
But most of what will happen now is way out of our hands
But a lot of what will happen next is beyond our control
So just let it go and see where it lands
So it's best to release our grip and let things unfold on their own
I believe in you and I believe in love
I trust in you and our relationship, despite the uncertainties ahead
