Their first release in 1985 was a seven-inch single named "Crazy Game", with the B-side "Everybody's Waiting (for Someone to Come Home)". That same year, the Indigo Girls released a six-track Extended play album named "Indigo Girls", and in 1987 released their first full-length album, Strange Fire, recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and including "Crazy Game". With this release, they secured the services of Russell Carter, who remains their manager to the present; they had first approached him when the EP album was released, but he told them their songs were "immature" and they were not likely to get a record deal.
They were signed to Epic Records in 1989 and won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album later that year (for their self titled release) Some of their hit songs include "Galileo," "Closer to Fine," and "Shame on You."
Aside from being musicians, Ray and Saliers are activists, constantly supporting causes like gun control, women's rights, Native American rights, environmental protection, the abolition of the death penalty, and as lesbians themselves, LGBT rights. They constantly devote their time and money to such causes, often playing benefit concerts.
Ray and Saliers both have side projects. Ray owns and founded Daemon Records, an independent label based in Decatur. She also has a career as a solo artist, and has released two albums thus far. Saliers is the part owner of Watershed, a restaurant and wine bar in Decatur.
Together, the Indigo Girls are constantly touring. Their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, was released March 24, 2009.
It Really is
Indigo Girls Lyrics

The tree I know so well is aglow
And folks are filled up with the usual holiday cheer
As they hang pretty lights and mistletoe
Oh, but this year is different for you and for me
Our own little miracle, on our own little street
Never before have I loved 'Silent Night' so
Baby, it is, baby, it is
It really is a wonderful life
I'd never noticed that the crackle of a fire
Makes music when accompanied by kiss
And when did I start having dreams about pumpkin pies
There's not a lot that's sweeter than this
Oh, but this year is better for you and for me
Our own little miracle, on our own little street
Never before have I loved 'Silent Night' so
But now that you're here by my side
Baby, it is, baby it is
It really is a wonderful life
Oh, but this year is better for you and for me
Our own little miracle, only our own little street
Never before have I loved 'Silent Night' so
But now that you're here by my side
Darling with you, by my side
Baby, it is, baby it is
It really is a wonderful life
In the first verse of “It Really Is”, the Indigo Girls paint a picture of a snowy, holiday season. Despite the typical cheer and decorations, the lyrics hint at something more special happening this year. With the arrival of the singer’s love interest, the holidays take on a new meaning. The second verse continues with these revelations, pointing out that previously unnoticed details, like the sound of a fire or the taste of pumpkin pie, have become more significant with the presence of her partner. The chorus reflects the joy that their relationship brings, describing their life together as “a wonderful life” multiple times.
While the song could be interpreted simply as a Christmas tune about feeling lucky, there are a few details that suggest a deeper meaning. The use of the phrase “our own little miracle” and the emphasis on the couple’s “own little street” give a sense of isolation from the world around them. This sense of insignificance is common for queer couples, who might feel like they have to create their own happiness separate from mainstream society. Additionally, the focus on the small details that make the singer happy rather than grand gestures or material possessions emphasizes the importance of love and connection over superficial things.
