Touch Me Fall
Indigo Girls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All skate
Now reverse

I'm waking from a dream
The neighborhood is green
All the sounds I've missed
All the years
Come down to wedding death and fear
I'll I've heard has been in vain
Like water on a stain
Touch me
I'm so beautiful
Rub your hands
Across my head
Just like this
Come with me
Now it's not worth it
If you don't
Are you hiding
I am hiding

Cypress moon
I'm bald in June
Like the granite
In a stream
Swamp Ophelia
I'm torn down
Let your waters
Let me drown
Touch me
I'm so beautiful
Rub your hands
Across my head
Just like this
Come with me
Now it's not worth it
If you don't
Are you crying
I am crying

Jump jump
Jump so high
Watch me let you down
If I stumble
I will stumble
If I fall
I will fall
I'm trying to hold it
Like rain in a river
Everything is
Getting bigger
Better this
Won't last forever
Touch me fall
Touch me fall

Jump jump
Jump so high
Watch me let you down
If I stumble
I will stumble
If I fall
I will fall
I'm trying to hold it
Like rain in a river
Everything is
Getting bigger
Better this

Won't last forever
Touch me fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Indigo Girls’s song Touch Me Fall are poetic and introspective. The song seems to be about a person who is reflecting on the past and the present, and trying to make sense of their place in the world. The opening lyrics “All skate, now reverse” are reminiscent of a roller-skating rink, where the DJ would call out these commands. In this context, it could be interpreted as a call to reverse the course of their life, to rethink their direction and to chart a new path.

The singer then talks about waking from a dream and looking around at the world. The neighborhood is green, and everything seems to be in perfect order. However, she realizes that she has missed so much, that the years have passed her by, and that she has not made the most of them. She speaks of all she has heard being in vain, like water on a stain. These lines evoke a sense of regret and frustration, of wanting to do more but feeling like she has not achieved what she wanted.

Later in the song, the singer speaks of “Cypress moon” and being “bald in June.” These are somewhat cryptic lines, but they suggest a feeling of being exposed, vulnerable, and laid bare. She then goes on to talk about “Swamp Ophelia,” which could be a reference to Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, who drowns in a stream. The metaphor of drowning in water is used to describe the feeling of being overwhelmed, of wanting to let go, and to be carried away by the current.

Overall, the lyrics of Touch Me Fall are open to interpretation, but they suggest a person who is struggling to make sense of their life, who is haunted by regrets and missed opportunities, and who wants to connect with someone who understands them. The repeated refrain of “Touch me, fall” is a plea for connection, for someone to come alongside and help them navigate the choppy waters of life.

I have this CD. I have most of Indigo Girls other CDs as well, however, this particular song has always been quite a mystery to me. It seems to change with whatever mood you are in when you listen to it. Sometimes beautiful and a celebration. Sometimes dark and mournful. Probably yet another testament to how talented these ladies are. Peace.

So I heard this song for the first time in the spring of 1994, at Union College in Schenectady, NY. It was a couple of months before the "Swamp Ophelia" album was released. They were doing a tour to see how well their new songs would be received. After playing a few of the old favorites, Amy came out with an electric guitar and did a theatrical "what's this?" look. Then they launched into this song. The audience reaction was equal parts "WTF did we just hear?" and "This is a work of genius." So glad I was there to hear this at the beginning.

This song reminds me of my youth! I loved them then and still turn to their music! This song makes me remember a time in my life that was precious to me and the person i shared it with. I will never get it back and i only have memories to remind me. When i hear this i can feel every touch and tingle.

My God! Nearly 20 years have passed since I last heard this song. It's every bit as moving as I remember it. I was never a big fan of these two, but there is obviously a timeless talent at work here.

They both have beautiful voices, one compliments the other BEAUTIFUL
