Watershed
Indigo Girls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thought I knew my mind
Like the back of my hand
The gold and the rainbow
But nothing panned out as I planned
And they say only milk and honey's
Gonna make your soul satisfied
Well I better learn how to swim
'Cause the crossing is chilly and wide

Twisted guardrails on the highway
Broken glass on the cement
A ghost of someone's tragedy
How recklessly my time has been spent
They say that it's never too late
But you don't, you don't get any younger
Well I better learn how to starve the emptiness
And feed the hunger

Up on the watershed
Standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
'Til your agony's your heaviest load
You'll never fly as the crow flies
Get used to a country mile
When you're learning to face
The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

And there's always retrospect (when you're looking back)
To light a clearer path
Every five years or so I look back on my life
And I have a good laugh
You start at the top (start at the top)
Go full circle round
Catch a breeze
Take a spill
But ending up where I started again
Makes me want to stand still

Up on the watershed
Standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
'Til your agony's your heaviest load
You'll never fly as the crow flies
Get used to a country mile
When you're learning to face
The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

Stepping on a crack (stepping on a crack)
Breaking up and looking back
'Til every tree limb overhead just seems to sit and wait
'Til every step you take becomes a twist of fate (twist of fate)

Up on the watershed
Standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
'Til your agony's your heaviest load
You'll never fly as the crow flies
Get used to a country mile
When you're learning to face
The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

Up on the watershed
Standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
'Til your agony's your heaviest load
You'll never fly as the crow flies
Get used to a country mile
When you're learning to face
The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

And when you're learning to face

The path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Indigo Girls’ “Watershed” reflect a person’s self-discovery and realization that life doesn’t always pan out as planned. The first verse shows the singer’s journey from feeling confident about knowing their mind to being uncertain about the future. The line “Well, I better learn how to swim, ‘Cause the crossing is chilly and wide” invokes a sense of fear in the singer about facing the unknown waters. The second verse uses imagery of twisted guardrails and broken glass to symbolize how recklessly and directionless the singer’s life has been until now. The lyrics also suggest a need to fill an emptiness within oneself, indicated by the line “Well, I better learn how to starve the emptiness And feed the hunger”. It’s a realization that one has to face the path ahead, and every choice is worth taking, even if it doesn’t lead to the desired destination. The chorus embodies this idea - “Every choice is worth your while”.

“Watershed” talks about standing at a fork in the road, where one can “agonize ‘til your agony’s your heaviest load.” It’s a reminder that we are not always going to fly in a straight line like the crow lives. Instead, we need to get used to every path's length and learn to face the path at our own pace. Stepping on a crack and looking back until every tree limb overhead just seems to sit and wait illustrates the fear of being vulnerable and hesitant to face unknown challenges. Ultimately, the song motivates people to take choices that are worth their while and embrace the journey's unpredictability.

I always liked this song, but a number of years ago, I was in therapy, dealing with a major depression and a messed-up life, and once at random I played this album, and the song had a billion times more meaningful. Suddenly it was all about where I was in my therapy, how I had so many choices ahead and it was worth testing them all to see how things worked, and it wouldn't work to rush things. For me, this song was all about optimism and healing.

Watershed is the first song I heard by the Indigo Girls. Emily (who wrote this) and Amy being a few months younger than I am lends a humbling quality to my perspective of them: they're phenomenal. Songs like this tend to be written by people further into their lives than their later 20s (at the time). That the song lyrics capture so much of what I cope with to be me just floors me and, with the melody, the harmonies and the musicianship, this song remains my all-time favorite of all artists.

I always loved this song!  I was an Indigo Girls fan when they first came out.  It was when I was in a "bad time of my life" that this song really meant something to me.  Now "Watershed" is my song of "deliverance" so to speak.

Janine Prowse

This song has been singing to me now for at least 27 years. It will always be one of my favourites, musically and lyrically.

This is my FAVORITE Indigo Girls song. I saw them in concert last night with 11 girlfriends and they didn't do this song :( so I told my friends I'd post this song today on my fb page so they could hear it. Yours was first version I found and Jenni, you did an AMAZING job editing with these phenomenal pictures! I just love the forests in Washington (especially around the Wenatchee River). THANK YOU for posting this beautiful "labor of love" & sharing it with the world so I could share it with my friends :D

Jenni Stevens

Liz, thank you for the compliments. it's a shame that they didn't play this song at your recent concert. I would have been so disappointed because it's one of my favorite Indigo Girls songs too. xoxox Jen

This song holds so much meaning to me. A song about reaching a crossroads and how powerful that can be. You have taken two of my favorite soul reaching things, Indigo Girls and photographs of nature and put them together and added my trademark, the word peace! Thank you Well done...you rock!

Jeff Hayes

Thank you for combining these pictures and this song, Jenni. The ending and the synchronicity of your video with a liminal moment in my life suggests that you are serving something higher. Namaste
