They gave their first concert at "Le Rose bonbon", a café in Paris on 29 September 1981. This brief performance on stage earned them their first contract with a record company.
They recorded their first single in November 1981. It included two songs, Dizzidence Politik and Françoise. Their most known song is "l'aventurier" (french for "adventurer") which has been covered by Nada Surf. As of 2006 they have released 11 albums and have had several member line up changes through the years. They are very famous in french-speaking Europe and Canada. Indochine has worked with important people in music such as Brian Molko, David Bowie, Robert Smith and Melissa Auf Der Maur.

The lyrics to Indochine's song "Gang Bang" express an intense and conflicted emotional state of mind. The singer is shown to be a person who dislikes Valentine's Day and everybody around them, including their partner's friends and family. They speak of feeling inadequate, particularly in their language skills (in the German language). The singer is feeling lost and disillusioned, particularly about the concept of love and whether or not it exists. Despite all of this, a constant in their life is their love for their partner. The lyrics reveal their deep longing for the touch of their partner's body and their willingness to be sexually intimate.
The second part of the song builds upon the theme of sexual intimacy and being free to live one's lives the way that they want. At the center of this are the singer's feelings towards their partner, as they profess their love once again. However, this time they also express their willingness to do whatever it takes to please their partner sexually. The song's lyrics suggest that the singer's partner is the one saving grace in their otherwise unhappy and unfulfilling life.
