Inge Bremnes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You went out of your way, didn't you?
And you went out of your hopes, didn't you?
And all these people you're trying to please,
they are over the moon by now.

You went out of yourself, didn't you?
And you were blamed for things you didn't do.
Please, we are over the moon by now.

I needed to blame someone,
for all of those things that was said and done.
Oh, stone cold.
We are putting our lives on hold.

Oh,
oh,
oh,

We went out of our selves, didn't we?
Oh, and I was screaming things I didn't mean.
Oh, stone cold.
We are putting our lives on hold.

And I went out of your way, didn't I?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in this portion of Inge Bremnes's song are about the singer and someone else they address, possibly a romantic partner, who have gone out of their way in an effort to please others. The first two lines suggest that the addressed person has gone above and beyond for others, maybe even sacrificing their own desires and needs for the sake of those they are trying to please. The repeated reference to people being "over the moon" suggests that this effort has been successful, but perhaps at a cost.

The next stanza seems to shift to the singer pointing the finger of blame at someone, potentially the addressed person or someone else. They acknowledge the person in question being blamed for things they didn't do, which could suggest a sense of injustice or misguided anger. The repeated line reminding this person that "we are over the moon by now" could be interpreted as a plea for them to focus on the success they've achieved rather than dwelling on the negative.

The final stanza returns to the singer reflecting on their own actions, admitting that they also went out of their way for someone else, but in doing so they said things they didn't mean. This could be seen as another example of the sacrifice and strain that can come with trying to please others. The final line, "and I went out of your way, didn't I?" brings the focus back to the addressed person, possibly leaving the listener wondering if the events described in the song have strained their relationship.
