In The Sea
Ingrid Michaelson(잉그리드 마이클슨) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel it in my skin, I feel it through my bones
Your fingertips are falling far from where I know
I try to pin you down but you move like a dream
I want to find you but you dropped me in the sea

In the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea
You dropped me in the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea
No no don't rescue me
I like the salt water sting
It feels so good to feel
It feels so good just to feel something
In the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea

You move so softly in the middle of the night
Like a cocoon in sheets you wrap you up so tight
Remember how we used to tangle up and breathe
Now you're so far away you roll me in the sea

In the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea
You dropped me in the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea

No no don't rescue me
I like the salt water sting
It feels so good to feel
It feels so good just to feel something
In the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh

No no don't rescue me (Oh oh oh oh)
I like the salt water sting (Oh oh oh oh)
It feels so good to feel (Oh oh oh oh)
It feels so good just to feel something (Oh oh oh oh)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ingrid Michaelson's song In The Sea is a creative way of expressing a feeling of being lost and abandoned by someone you deeply cared about. The first few lines state that the singer can feel the absence of the other person down to their bones, and even their skin has a yearning for them. However, despite the intense desire to be with them, they are unable to hold onto them, as they seem to exist in a dreamlike state, always one step ahead of their grasp. In the end, the person drops them in the sea, leaving them feeling isolated and alone.

The chorus of the song, which repeats the words "in the sea" is a poignant reminder that the person they once loved has left them to drown. However, there is a sense of acceptance to it, as the singer almost seems to enjoy the sensation of being lost in the sea, free to feel the saltwater sting on their skin. The singer understands that while they are lost, they are still alive and able to feel something.

The song's lyrics are a powerful testament to the many ways we can experience loss, and while it may leave us feeling overwhelmed and alone, it is essential to accept and embrace these feelings to move forward. The chorus's repeating line of "in the sea" is reflective of the ebb and flow of life and the different emotional states we can pass through as we navigate this journey.

I love the register Ingrid sings in for this song, and really I love most songs about the sea, but this is by far my most favorite Ingrid song ever, actually, and especially my favorite song on the last album. It feels powerful and consuming-- I get goosebumps during the "it feels so good to feeeel" parts :)

We Stan

Omg, is there no style Ingrid can't sing in? Love her even more! :D

spasticsummer

Maybe it's my love of the sea in general, but this song has got to be my favorite off the album. I love the depiction of wanting someone who's pushing you away, not to mention the sea analogy is spot on. Brilliant song, this is.

Her albums differ so much I love it. She is maturing with each album I feel. I love the rawness of Boys and Girls, but this album does have a certain charm to it.

Meg Di Maggio

They're both super-talented and have such cool styles. It would be really interesting to see a collaboration between the two.

GrammarSpelling101

Her old music isn't my kind of music, too bubbly and bright. LOVE this song. I wouldn't mind if she made more like this lol

Tomathys

Ahhh man this is so diferent to all Ingrids other stuff! Sort of a more mature sound? It's awesome! Absolutely LAV IT.

Meg Di Maggio

Omg. I think I would have a heart attack if Regina and Ingrid collaborated! They're my two favorite female artists :-)

Meg Di Maggio

She's definitely a growing, evolving artist. And that's totally cool :-)

Ashley

I love the edge. It's bitter, with teeth-gritting attitude. LOVE IT.
