Black and Blue

Boy I think I know what you are all about
Finally I can finally see
You pull the darkness right down over me
But now I see
Everybody knows that I'm a mess
Everybody knows you stole the heart from out my chest
You're hiding behind your sweet your sweet goodbyes
I'm black and blue
'Cause I fell for you
You said you never would let me go
Oh how could I ever know (I'm falling)
I'm black and blue
And in love with you
You said, you never would let me fall
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
You never would let me fall,
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
Oh I know I'm never gonna stop
I keep burning time away until I hit the top
One day I'll wake up and take up to the open skies
And I'll be the one with all the sweet goodbyes
Black and blue
'Cause I fell for you
You said you never would let me go
Oh how could I ever know (I'm falling)
I'm black and blue
And in love with you
You said, you never would let me fall
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
You never would let me fall,
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
Falling, falling
Over and over, over and over again
I'm always falling
Over and over
But I'll get up, I'll make it
I need some time to unbreak it
I feel like, I'm falling, I'm falling far away from you
It's what I need to do
Black and blue and in love with you
Black and blue and in love with you
You said, you never would let me fall
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
You never would let me fall
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
You never would let me fall
You never would let me fall, but I'm falling
And I'm falling
Black and blue
It's what I need to do
The song Black and Blue by Ingrid Michaelson is a tale of heartbreak and betrayal. The lyrics speak of a love that has gone wrong, and a lover who has been deceived. The singer expresses her pain and sadness, telling the listener that she is "black and blue" because of her love for this person who has hurt her. She initially thought she had this person "figured out", but now she sees the truth. Everyone around her knows that she is a "mess," and that this person has "stolen the heart from out my chest." The singer reveals that she has been lied to and deceived, but the other person is hiding behind their "sweet goodbyes." The song builds to a climax with the singer expressing how she is constantly "falling" for this person, even though they have hurt her.
The metaphor of being "black and blue" is used to represent the bruises and pain that come with heartbreak. The singer is in love with someone who they believed would never hurt them or let them fall, but they have fallen hard. The chorus repeats these lines, emphasizing the singer’s feelings of pain, confusion, and helplessness. The last few lines of the song show a glimmer of hope, with the singer saying she will "get up" and "make it." However, she acknowledges that she needs time to "unbreak it" and is taking a step away from the relationship.
Overall, Black and Blue is a powerful song that speaks to anyone who has experienced heartbreak or betrayal. The lyrics are deeply emotional, and the melody and instrumentation work together to convey the message of pain and sadness. The song’s themes of heartbreak and recovery are universal and can resonate with a wide range of listeners.

I had the hardest time getting myself to like this song, just because the sound is a little different from the others on this album. But, finally, I love it!

God, I just love her so much :) I've been listening to her songs all day and it gave me this idea to become an anonymous helper. I'll write on the bathroom stalls, still keepin my identity a secret. I'll write lyrics from her songs, insperational quotes, things that would make people smile. I know the stalls where people go to cry, that's where I'll write. I want to make people smile, and tell them that sadness and fear are just are challenges to overcome. And bitch, I'm supposed to studying...
