December Baby
Ingrid Michaelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The colored lights, they brightly shine
Unlike your eyes avoiding mine
The snow is folding sheet upon sheet
Our hands not holding as we cross the street

You have had your fill, your fill of me
You have had your fill, your fill of me
I wore the dress I thought you loved
But my boots are filling with snow you shoved
Off of the car we climb into
You finished first, I must catch up to you

You have had your fill, your fill of me
You have had your fill, your fill of me

How can I catch up when I don't don't want to?
How can I catch up when I still want you?

You have had your fill, your fill of me
You have had your fill, your fill of me

December baby, you are my
December baby, you are my

December baby, you are my
December baby, you are mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "December Baby" by Ingrid Michaelson seem to tell the story of a relationship that has ended, yet the two individuals are still together, but it's not the same. The opening lines of the song talk about the colored lights shining brightly, unlike the eyes of the person who is avoiding looking at their partner, indicating that there might be some tension in the air. The next line talks about the snow, which is falling sheet upon sheet, and their hands are not holding, which symbolizes that there is no connection or warmth left in this relationship.

As the song continues, the lyrics talk about how the person has had enough, and they have filled their quota regarding their partner. They wore the dress which they believed their partner loved, but their boots are filling with snow that they shoved off the car, indicating that this relationship was never about the small things. As they climb into the car, their partner finished first, and they must play catch-up, which symbolizes that they have disconnected, and someone is always ahead of the other.

The song's final lines talk about the December baby, who the person is holding onto, despite everything that has happened because they are still in love with them. In conclusion, "December Baby" talks about a relationship that has ended, yet the two individuals are still together, but it's not the same anymore.

Probably my favorite Ingrid song!  It's like crack to my ears.

December was their month of love and ache. She gave all of herself until the very end. She was giving her body when she knew he was done. She doesn't want to catch up with him because she isn't ready for it to be over. She is behind him living in the time they were together. Living in security and love that is no longer there. He took it and moved on without her.
