History
Inhumate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A human blood written book
Page of centuries torn skin
Future with death and madness
Can even God read those lines?

Past... Present... Future
Oval... Oval Account (x2)
Endless lack of knowledge
For our rational weak minds
Desire to break the circle
Need to read the bloody lines

If God wrote the first word
Why can't He put the last point?
Trapped in the oval account
He bends to His creation, as us!

History... Oval Account!
L'Histoire... Récit Ovale! (x2)

Past... Time of all taboos
Eyes bleed watching behind
Present... Time of all tortures
Feel the suffer to live

Future... Time of all pleasures
Ouvre... Ouvre les yeux et souffre! (x2) *

We are the witnesses
Witnesses of a single word
Word that might, might be: Hell!
If He can't put the last point...

[*: Open... Open the eyes and suffer!]

Overall Meaning

The song "History" by Inhumate is an existential exploration of the nature of time and human existence. The lyrics describe a "human blood written book" that contains the history of humanity, with pages "torn" by the ravages of time. The future is described as a frightening and uncertain place, filled with "death and madness." Despite the seemingly limitless knowledge contained in this book, the song asks whether even God can fully comprehend its meaning.

The song is divided into three sections that correspond to different periods of time: the past, the present, and the future. Each of these periods is described in vivid, often disturbing terms. The past is a time of "all taboos," while the present is a time of "all tortures" and suffering. The future is the time of "all pleasures," but this pleasure comes at a cost, as listeners are urged to "open their eyes and suffer."

Ultimately, the song suggests that all of human existence is contained within an "oval account," a circular narrative that may never be resolved. Even if God wrote the first word, the song implies, he may never be able to put an end to the story.

The guillotine was actually a massive improvement on better humane executions. The idea was a giant blade cam down like a clap of thunder, the head was removed and the man was no more. It was seen as a way better form of execution than the previously used hanging and "drawn and quartered" executions, which ironically enough were also considered more humane (the hanging not the latter) was more humane than even the executions before that one.

Decapitation is scary and traumatising. A body without a head is this inhuman, dead, mutilated thing. The face of the victim is stuck in either an expression of surprise or terror.

But it is spectacular, and frightening for the ones being targeted for execution. I've always been creeper out and fascinated by beheading.

The guillotine was also just a better copy of the Scottish Maiden and the Halifax Gibbet.

I've read that it might be possible for a person to still be conscious a few seconds after being beheaded. There are real accounts of decapitated heads moving their eyes, mouth, etc. But that could also be the nerves reacting.
