By 1988, however, Ini Kamoze had effectively disappeared from the music scene following lukewarm reactions to his intermittent releases.
In 1994, Kamoze burst back onto the scene with a harder sound and the song which would become his signature - "Here Comes The Hotstepper". Adopting his nickname from the song title, Kamoze would become known as the "Hotstepper", from the Patois for a man on the run from the law. The infectious song found its way onto several soundtracks, including the fashion-industry satire, "Prêt-à-Porter". The resulting video featured a much more solid Kamoze and the obligatory scantily-clad women for this genre of music. "Hotstepper" still remains one of dancehall's more well-known hits, with its call-and-response chorus of "Here come de hotstepper - MURDERER (often misheard as "Word it up") - I'm de lyrical gangsta - MURDERER" lighting up clubs worldwide. "Here Comes The Hotstepper" remains Kamoze's only US #1 hit (see Hot 100 No. 1 Hits of 1994).

Well, I don't wanna be friendly
With a man who would tell me
One truth and twenty lie
Who try to take what I mon' make
Well, I don't respect you guy
And you won't come here I say
Is a lucky thing I am a strong man
Or I would'a lose my sting
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
Well, under ya law, I a outlaw
My right is made a wrong
You take the meat and you eat all the bone
And said I should run along, boy
And now, when I ask, what's there for me?
You say, ?What will be, will be?
Now, you sit down, get fat and round
Collecting my royalty
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
From I was born, they came along
And stole my navel string
In a broad day light, my birthright
Was robbed by your king
Now, you want to know
How much we know you?
You, you all bunch of crows
You don't know that we don't know
It's not the bottler or date, it is the Coke
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
Well, I don't wanna be friendly
With a man who would tell me
One truth and twenty lie
Who try to take what I done make
Well, I don't respect you guy
And now everyday, you come around my way
And you won't come here I say
Is a lucky thing I am a strong man
Or I would'a lose my sting
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
Well, I know what ya wanna do
I won't do what you want me to
To my own self I must be true
So away, away with you
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
Pirate, pirate, pirate, pi
Ini Kamoze's song "Pirate" is a reggae track that speaks of the struggles of a man who has been deceived by someone he trusted. The song speaks of how he has been wronged and how he feels about this, with the term "pirate" being a reference to the person who has taken advantage of him. From the first verse, it is clear that the singer does not want to be friendly with someone who cannot be trusted. He speaks of how this person has lied to him on numerous occasions and attempted to take what belongs to him. As a result, he has no respect for this person.
The second verse speaks of how the person in question is taking advantage of him even more by collecting his royalties, leaving him with very little to show for his hard work. The singer speaks of how he is an outlaw under the law of the land, and despite this, he will not be taken advantage of any more by this pirate. The final verse speaks of how the singer has been wronged since he was born, with his navel string being stolen from him on the day he was born. He speaks of how despite this, he knows who he is and will not be overtaken by someone who has no respect for him.
