Im Making Believe
Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm making believe that you're in my arms though I know you're so far away
Making believe I'm talking to you, wish you could hear what I say
And here in the gloom of my lonely room we're dancing like we used to do
Making believe is just another way of dreaming, so till my dreams come true

I'll whisper "Good night", turn out the light, and kiss my pillow
Making believe it's you
I'm making believe that you're in my arms though I know you're so far away
Making believe I'm talkin' to you, wish you could hear what I say

And here in the gloom of my lonely room we're dancing like we used to do
Making believe is just another way of dreamin', so till my dreams come true
I'll whisper "Good night", turn out the light, and kiss my pillow
Making believe it's you

And here in the gloom of my lonely room we're dancing like we used to do
Making believe is just another way of dreamin', so till my dreams come true

I'll whisper "Good night", turn out the light, and kiss my pillow
Making believe it's you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ink Spots' "I'm Making Believe" depict the singer's yearning for a distant loved one. Despite the impossibility of physical proximity, the singer engages in a form of wishful thinking, wherein they imagine their beloved is with them, talking and dancing as they used to do. The singer even kisses their pillow as if it were the loved one. By repeating the phrase "making believe," the song suggests that this act of dreamlike pretending is a coping mechanism for the singer's loneliness and separation from the person they miss so deeply.

The use of dancing in the lyrics serves as a metaphor for the intimacy and connection the singer seeks with their loved one. Dancing together is a shared experience that they can relive even when apart. Similarly, the act of "making believe" is a form of shared imagination that brings the singer closer to their beloved, even if only in their own mind.

Overall, the song captures the bittersweet sentiment of longing for someone who is out of reach. It highlights the power of the imagination to provide temporary solace in the face of separation, but also the painful reality that the imagined presence is not the same as the real thing.

My mother used to sing this song every now and again. I never heard it except when she sang it. Today I heard someone singing an it reminded me of my Mom, so I typed the lyrics in Google to find that Ella Fitzgerald sang it. I'm having some fund memories of my mother. I miss her everyday. Rest in Peace Princess Dot.
