Dark Mother
Inkubus Sukkubus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The corn is high underneath the moon,
And winter comes, it seems too soon.
And time waits not for woman or man,
And death rides out across the land.

Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night,
Through Death's door guide us to the light.
Through the pain set us free.
Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night, let us be reborn again.

Now Death has come, and Death has kissed,
Death's bitter song is upon the mist.
The dreams of youth bring a cynical smile,
But my true love shall never die.

Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night,
Through Death's door guide us to the light.
Through the pain set us free.
Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night, let us be reborn again.

The buds have blown, and the flowers have gone.
The once firm breasts hang wrinkled and long.
The Wheel of Fate is a-spinning round,
The Autumn leaves are upon the ground.

Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night,
Through Death's door guide us to the light.

Through the pain set us free.
Our dark Mother, Queen of the Night, let us be reborn again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Inkubus Sukkubus's song Dark Mother evoke a sense of acceptance and reverence towards the natural cycles of life and death. The opening lines set the tone for this with the image of the corn high under the moon and the arrival of winter seeming too soon. Time waits for no one, and death comes to all, as death rides out across the land.

However, the chorus brings a sense of comfort through the invocation of the "dark Mother, Queen of the Night," who guides us through death's door to the light and sets us free from pain. The repetition of this chorus throughout the song emphasizes the idea of the cyclical nature of life and death as well as the power of the dark Mother to lead us through it.

The verses bring personal reflections on youth, true love, and the aging process. The bitter song of death is upon the mist, but true love shall never die. The Wheel of Fate is always spinning and the autumn leaves are upon the ground, representing the cyclical nature of life and death. It is a song that celebrates our journey through life, from birth to death, and acknowledges the role of the dark Mother as a guide towards the light.

I'll be honest: I kind of prefer this simple footage to the more involved stuff (Field of the Nymphs or Storm Witch, for example). Animated objects - especially ones depicting the human form - invite analysis. If they look "off," it can break immersion a lot more readily than this plain, yet moody and evocative landscape. This is much more immersive, and I like it a bunch!
