After being in existence for about a year the band released their first single, Beltaine, which received Radio 1 and regional airplay. However, shortly after this some members of the band drifted away leaving just Candia & Tony. The couple, however, continued in the form of Children of the Moon, a studio-based project in much the same vein as Incubus Succubus. Their material was very well received by the growing Pagan underground scene.
In December 1991 Bob, the original for Incubus Succubus. drummer, rejoined Candia & Tony, and Incubus Succubus was consequently reborn. The band played around Gloucestershire, Bristol and Oxford, and released all of the Children of the Moon material on one cassette album called Beltaine.

By this time Incubus Succubus were being hailed as `Britain's Premier Pagan Rock band'. 1993 brought offers from independent record companies, which resulted in the release of Belladonna & Aconite on CD in October, and the Wytches CD in April 1994 on Pagan Records.

The Leveller
Inkubus Sukkubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Upon the raging storm
And as an angel of love he reaps the harvest corn
He comes as a leveller to make one and all the same
His song on the western wind to deliver us from pain
(Chorus)
Take his hand
He is the only true friend of the poor
Can you not see that only he can ever set you free
He is the only true friend of the poor
And all the kings and the queens and the generals
Dread the gaze of his eyes
But to the sick and the cold and the starving
He's a blessing in disguise
For his sweet kiss brings release
And they shall suffer no more
So they don't fear when he comes
A-knock-knock-knocking on the door
(Chorus x 4)
Take his hand
For only he'll lead you on to the promised land
He is the only true friend of the poor
Can you not see that only he can ever set you free
He is the only true friend of the poor
The song "The Leveller" by Inkubus Sukkubus is a reflective piece that delves into the duality of death, particularly with how it is perceived by the rich and the poor. The singer, the leveller, is described as a darkened knight who appears upon a raging storm – an ominous but powerful image that represents the inevitability of death. However, he is also portrayed as an angel of love and the only true friend of the poor, as he is the only one who can alleviate their suffering.
The leveller is seen as a force that makes everyone equal in their mortality, with his song on the western wind bringing the promise of the end of pain. To the kings, queens, and generals, the leveller is feared because of his ability to level the playing field, making them just as vulnerable as the poor. But to the sick, cold, and starving, he is a blessing in disguise, as his sweet kiss brings release from suffering. It is especially telling that the leveller is not only seen as the harbinger of death but also as a deliverer of mercy to those who have been suffering.
Thus, the song highlights how death is a universal experience that affects all, regardless of social status. The leveller, as the personification of death or mortality, shows that in death, everyone is equal. The song encourages the listener to embrace the leveller – to take his hand – as he is the only one who can lead them to the promised land, free from pain and suffering.

There talking about Jesus he was said to be a Leveller and he knocks on people doors. He is death to those not following him after all. Wicca believe and teach of him to not just Christians.
