Black Roses
Inner Circle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whatever happen to my
Garden of black roses
Oh nurturin' years of so long
Whatever happen to my
Garden of black roses
They say a stranger
Treated them wrong
When I was a boy
I planted a garden
That meant so much to me
One of reality
A garden of love,
None like it
One of a kind quality
A prayer for you and me

If we can keep the candles burnin'
To shelter them from pain,
Oh let them laugh again,
Shower the world
With their innocence
Who's tears felt like rain
History remains the same

But one by one
They come up missing
Strangers thought I was sleepin'
Some life means nothin' to some

Watch out, now
We've got them on the run

Overall Meaning

In the song "Black Roses" by Inner Circle, the lyrics refer to a personal garden that was once full of beautiful and unique black roses. The garden was planted during the childhood years, and it represented a reality of love that was one of its kind. The garden was considered to be a prayer for everyone to share a life that is filled with love.

However, the sentimental lyrics reveal that someone unknown came into the garden and destroyed it by treating the rose plants wrongly. The song indicates that even though the garden may be destroyed, the story of it remains the same. The lyrics speak to the human desire to hold onto innocence and the importance of protecting those with tender hearts.

This music is not about love or even racism but about the children in Africa that are used as young soldiers in many wars there. They lost their innocence, their lives..so this "garden of black roses" is stolen...a beautiful song for a terrible situation.
