The reggae group Inner Circle was formed in 1968 by the brothers Ian and Roger Lewis in Jamaica. At first they covered soul and R&B hits from the United States, and then also a few reggae songs, predominantly from Bob Marley.
The band released two albums as The Inner Circle in 1974 for jamaican label "Starapple"(and they were distributed by "Trojan" in UK), and resigned to Capitol Records in 1976, and Island Records(where the internationally successful album "Everything Is Great" originated. This album reached top 20 in the UK and preceded their other chart success by some years) in 1979.
Inner Circle was decidedly influenced through the original member Jacob Miller, the frontman and lead singer who was killed in a car crash on March 23, 1980. At the end of the 1970s Inner Circle with Jacob "Killer" Miller was more popular in Jamaica than Bob Marley. The band also appeared in the reggae cult film Rockers in 1978.
After the loss of Jacob Miller, Inner Circle broke up, but in 1982 another album called Something So Good was released. In 1986 Ian and Roger Lewis reestablished Inner Circle with the singer Carlton Coffie, and the band experienced a comeback with the album Black Roses.
In 1989, Inner Circle released the song "Bad Boys." Since then, the band calls itself "The Bad Boys of Reggae". They had another big hit with the 1993 song "Sweat (A La La La La Long)."
The lead singer Carlton Coffie was ill for a long period in 1995 and decided after his recuperation to start a solo career. The current singer Kris Bentley took his place.

How does your garden grow?
We're confused, trying to load
What seeds you use?
Columbian Red, straight to your head
Miss Mary, you strike again
Sensimelia, Thai sticks too
and some good lumps raaayah
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Smokin', smokin', smokin'
Is good for the brain Miss Mary You strike again!
Veggie temple for the brain
Helpin' me to cope with word is strain
Thousands of people can't believe
How your garden grows so naturally
Columbian Red, straight to your head
Miss Mary, you strike again
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
Miss Mary You strike again!
(Instrumental)
I got a smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Veggie temple for the brain
Helpin' me to cope with word is strain
Thousands of people Can't believe
How your garden grows so naturally
Columbian Red Straight to your head
Miss Mary, you strike again

I don't want no more Of that there cocaine
Smokin', smokin', smokin' Is good for the brain
Miss Mary you strike again.
The lyrics of "Mary Mary" by Inner Circle can be interpreted as an ode to marijuana, with Mary being a slang term for the drug. The song starts with the age-old nursery rhyme about Mary's garden, with the artist's confusion about what seeds Mary uses. However, it is then revealed that Mary's garden is filled with different strains of marijuana, such as Columbian Red and Thai sticks. The artist then praises the effects of smoking marijuana on mental health, stating that it is good for the brain and better than cocaine.
The song reinforces the idea of marijuana as a natural remedy and veggie temple for the brain, helping people cope with stress and wordly strain. The use of phrases like "Miss Mary, you strike again" at the end of each verse implies that marijuana is addictive and has a powerful effect on its users. The instrumental parts in the song have a laid-back reggae beat, adding to the mood of relaxation and leisure.
Overall, the song celebrates the use of marijuana and highlights its positive effects while rejecting the use of cocaine. It can be seen as a reflection of the ongoing debate about the legalization of marijuana and its acceptance in society.
