Inner Surge was a Canadian metal band from Calgary, Alberta. The band blends metal, hardcore, progressive rock, electronic, and Eastern influences.
History
Formed in 2001 by Steve Moore, Inner Surge's debut album Solus Verum consisted of 16 tracks with a lyrical and personal approach to issues in today's society. Matrika, their second album, was recorded at Organic Sounds studios in Calgary. Space Junkies gave it 10+ out of 10, while Bands United described it as "Disturbingly fresh". It was additionally featured on Punkcanada.net's "Top 10 of 2004". The band quickly emerged as one of Canada's most critically acclaimed heavy bands. RWS Magazine described Inner Surge as "possibly among one of the best imports that Canada has to offer - aside from Molson Beer, Peter North, and Shania Twainโs genes, that is." The band is usually described as metal, punk or metalcore, though opinions vary. Inner Surge's influences, as cited on the sleeve of its CD, Signals Screaming, include such controversial voices of left-wing dissent as Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, George Orwell, Naomi Klein and Public Enemy's Chuck D. Their track "Halliburton Piggies" was nominated for a Just Plain Folks award in the metal category.
Inner Surge was also featured in a book by Garry Sharpe-Young, New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Inner Surge played the 2006 Vans Warped Tour in Calgary on July 20 with headlining acts such as Helmet and AFI. Their most recognized album was their final release, "An Offering", which was also their most aggressive album. Since the band's split, the members have moved on to form projects such as Post Death Soundtrack (Steve Moore's industrial/electronic band - www.postdeathsoundtrack.com), Truck (Bryan Sandau and Scott Taylor's instrumental metal band), and The Unravelling (a project where all 3 former members are involved - www.theunravellingmusic.com).

She set out into the night
The world seemed inviting
She felt no need to fight
But temptation holds a deceptive charm
That tickles your finger and rips off your arm
She sees the crocodile slip in the water with ease
But he is not so welcoming
Why is she not happy with the shore?
She sees the fruit but not the poison
Doubts surround her but she does not avoid them
I try to call her
She can't hear
She's falling in love with fear
She used to love the quiet of night
Now she's scared and can't take the silence
She once believed in what was right
Now she runs and hides from the light
She's falling
"The Fall" by Inner Surge is a song that delves into the theme of temptation and it's consequences. The lyrics describe a woman who sets out into the night due to her restlessness. She finds the world inviting and feels no need to fight. However, as she is enticed by temptation, she loses control and finds herself falling. The femme fatale in the song sees the crocodile that slips into the water with ease, and becomes envious of his ability to navigate through challenges. She wants to jump in but realizes the crocodile is not so accommodating to her presence, and she is left unsatisfied with the shore.
As she continues to be fascinated by the deceptive charm of temptation, she loses sight of what is right and falls into a love affair with fear. The mysterious doubts that surround her do not deter her from continuing on this path. The singer tries to call out to her, but she can't hear him. He watches as she falls and struggles to grapple with why she is not happy with the shore.
The woman that is described in "The Fall" was once content with the quiet of the night, but now she is scared and can't take the silence. She used to believe in what was right, but now she runs and hides from the light. This song sheds light on the dangers of temptation and how it can lead one to fall into a cycle of fear and isolation.
