Founded in Detroit in 1989, Insane Clown Posse performs a style of hardcore hip hop known as horrorcore and is known for its elaborate live performances. Originally known as JJ Boyz and Inner City Posse, the group introduced supernatural- and horror-themed lyrics as a means of distinguishing itself stylistically. The duo founded the independent record label Psychopathic Records with Alex Abbiss as manager, and produced and starred in the feature films Big Money Hustlas and Big Money Rustlas. They formed their own professional wrestling promotion, Juggalo Championship Wrestling, and later collaborated with many hip hop and rock musicians.
The songs of Insane Clown Posse center thematically on the mythology of the Dark Carnival, a metaphoric limbo in which the lives of the dead are judged by one of several entities. The Dark Carnival is elaborated through a series of stories called Joker's Cards, each of which offers a specific lesson designed to change the "evil ways" of listeners before "the end consumes us all". The original lineup of Insane Clown Posse was John Utsler (John Kickjazz), Joe Bruce (Violent J) and Joey Utsler (Shaggy 2 Dope). John Utsler left before Carnival of Carnage was released in 1992.
Insane Clown Posse's performance style is often described as horrorcore hip hop, which "utilize shocking (and blatantly over-the-top) narratives to give an over-exaggerated, almost cartoon-like version of urban deprivation in Detroit", according to author Sara Cohen. Bruce and Utsler describe many of their lyrics as being tongue-in-cheek. The group's early work features a raw, minimalistic sound, which later evolved into a more rock-oriented style. The group's lyrics serve as morality tales, with songs focusing on subjects such as cannibalism, murder and necrophilia. Insane Clown Posse's debut album, Carnival of Carnage, features a politically-oriented focus, criticizing elitism and prejudice against those who live in the ghetto, while the album's liner notes criticize the Gulf War. The group's lyrics have opposed racism, bigotry, domestic violence, and child abuse.
Insane Clown Posse has covered songs by Geto Boys, Sly Fox, and Above the Law. Bruce and Utsler refer to Ice Cube, Awesome Dre, Geto Boys, and Esham as influences on their own music, while Bruce has expressed admiration for Gong, Pearl Jam, and Michael Jackson. Mike E. Clark's production for the group incorporates elements such as "carnival organ riffs, power chords and shotgun blasts...banjolike plucking and Van Halen-esque guitar squeals", while Bruce and Utsler sometimes alternate between rapping and screaming. Bruce has credited pop music as an influence on some of the group's material, even terming the music "Wicked Pop". Bruce has also stated "We do our own genre of music". In his review of The Tempest, Allmusic's David Jeffries writes that Bruce and Utsler "[rap] in a carnival barker fashion that fits with their circus motif, their Insane Clown disguises, and Mike E. Clark's big top-inspired production." Insane Clown Posse has influenced similar acts, such as Axe Murder Boyz, Blaze Ya Dead Homie and Boondox.

Taurus, born in 1775
I'm like 300 and something, but I'm still alive
I used to hang with the original billy the kid
You prob'ly think I'm only playing but, I did
My daddies were a two headed freak show
Momma, a fortune teller, esmarelda zella
And I was born the next day, violent j
When I was 14, I tripped on the train track
And I was crushed right there on the steel rack
I'm out cold, they thought it had fucked me up
I got up and itched my butt, I'm like, "what?"
Everybody tripped and called me the clown devil boy
Child of the witch heffer, whatever
Tied me up, burned me and threw stones
Had a few scrapes and cuts, smokey nuts
After that they started bowing and shit
Praying at me, you know how them primitives get
I said, "get off my dick, I ain't a savior,
I'm what you call a juggalo and all I want is my flavor
Four simple things in this bitch, before I die
I want a rusty axe
I wanna know voodoo
A fat bitch named bridgett
And a little sip of faygo, too
'till I get my shit, in this motherfucker I won't never die!
So anyway
50 years pass, all my homies are old ass fucks
I ain't even got hair on my nuts
I left the village in search of my ends
I wrestled alligators, battled terminators
Nothing ever killed me, nothing could harm me
I fought in the civil war, yankees army
I walked across enemy lines with a mack-10
Man, they didn't even have that shit back then
How you just gonna come in my shit and fuck it up?
Well at least make this shit sound real, man, damn!
I walked across enemy lines with a, lantern
Steady taking cannon balls, to the balls
The war ended, I traveled the country horseback
Until this fool tried to horsejack
He put his gat to my head and blew my face up
(Pow) it didn't even smear the make-up
I took his gun and put a tivet in his neck
Sheriff didn't like it, I got indicted
87 long years in the state pen
Until they finally forgot why they put me in
They had to let me go they can't hold me on nothing
On the way out they're like, "yo, ain't you like 100 and something?"
I said, "that's right, and I ain't gonna die
'till I get my shit, motherfucker!"
I want a rusty axe
I wanna know voodoo
A fat bitch named bridgett
And just a little sip or two,
'Till I get my shit, in this motherfucker I won't never die!
I slept under bridges, lived in the valleys
Climbed the mountains, searched the alleys
More years passed, and I still ain't died
Now I'm in detroit on the southwest side
My homie has an impala, blue '67
Last night we hit the road pushing 111
I stuck my head out the window, told him floor up the most
And let my nugget ping off a light post
Ha ha ha! hell yeah 'cause
Hurts a little bit, but then you get a straight buzz
The world hates me 'cause of shit like this
They always try to kill me but miss
I know it's odd that my face is forever painted
When I was born, the bitch-ass doctor fainted
My toungue's a little long, I choke people with it
Looks kinda nasty, but chicks dig it
And I told ya my neck can stretch for miles
I look like something from 'the x-files'
People wanna see me die more than a little bit
But I'm a juggalo, and as a juggalo I want my shit!
And I ain't gonna die, till I get it!
I want a rusty axe
I wanna know voodoo
A fat bitch named bridgett
I said faygo, fuck mountain dew
'till I get my shit, in this motherfucker I won't never die!
Die!
Die!
The song "I Want My Sh*t" by Insane Clown Posse tells the story of a man born into a family of freaks and fortune tellers. He claims to have lived for over 300 years, having hung out with Billy the Kid and fought in the Civil War. The song is full of humorous exaggerations and absurdities that satirize the idea of immortality and the desire for material possessions.
The lyrics describe the man's journey to search for four things that he wants before he dies - a rusty axe, knowledge of voodoo, a fat woman named Bridgett, and a little sip of Faygo soda. He claims that he will never die until he gets what he wants, and the only reason people try to kill him is because of his unusual appearance.
The song is an example of the bizarre and comedic style of rap that made Insane Clown Posse famous. Through their music, the group critiques societal norms and values, and uses humor to address serious topics. "I Want My Sh*t" may sound like a parody of a rap song, but it also explores themes of mortality, identity, and individuality.
