Rest My Chemistry
Interpol Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I haven't slept for two days
I've bathed in nothing but sweat
And I've made hallways scenes for things to regret
My friends they come
And the lines they go by

Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry
Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry

I live my life filled with no pain
Just some rage and three kinds of yes
And I've made stairways
Such scenes for things that I regret
Oh, those days in the sun
They bring a tear to my eye

Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry
Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry

But you're so young
You're so young
You look in my eyes
You're so young, so sweet, so surprised

I see a sign says "OK"
Gotta take a ride, just recline in the faraway
Gotta take some time to realize
That my friends they come
And the lines they go by

Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry
Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry

But you're so young
You're so young
You look in my eyes
So young, so sweet, so surprised
You look so young like a daisy in my lazy eyes

Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry
Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry

Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry
Tonight I'm gonna rest my chemistry

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Interpol's song Rest My Chemistry explore the themes of exhaustion, regret and addiction. The singer has not slept for two days and has been experiencing a mix of emotions including rage and regret. He reflects on his past experiences, such as "days in the sun" that now bring a tear to his eye. The chorus brings a sense of relief as he plans to "rest his chemistry" indicating a desire to take a break from the emotions and perhaps a reference to self-medicating.

The second verse continues to explore the singer's past actions, indicating he has made "stairways scenes" for things he regrets. This could be interpreted as creating situations that lead to regret or perhaps depict the physical act of descending stairways under the influence of drugs. The lines "But you're so young/You look in my eyes/So young, so sweet, so surprised" could be referencing the age difference between the singer and another person, highlighting the difference in experience and implying caution. The final chorus repeats the desire to "rest [his] chemistry" and the lyrics "like a daisy in my lazy eyes" perhaps indicate a sense of whimsy or delirium.

Overall, the lyrics to Rest My Chemistry paint a picture of a tired and conflicted character, grappling with his past and present actions and seeking some form of relief through rest and reflection.

interpol are so under appreciated. they are "the doors" of our time. so poetic

nick brown, agreed. our comments will get lost in the dust of energy which is our brief moment of expressionism in this mere dream we call life....., but I do declare.. you are right, sir

I agree that Rock 'n' Roll finally has another voice of poetic authority in Paul Banks.

Isabella Rose

Yes sir!! 😎

Totally agreed and this film is also severely underrated. This all pairs so beautifully. Taking a deep breath at the end of this year looking back brought me here.

The Magical, Mystical Otter-lion

This was the song to get me into Interpol. It brought this post-punk vibe mixed in with The Pixies and sounded so hypotonic and dream-like that you just can’t stop listening to!
