The group was formed by students at Universidad Técnica del Estado at Santiago, Chile in 1967. In 1973 as they were on tour abroad, General Augusto Pinochet launched a coup d'etat and took power. Having heard of the numerous extra-judicial killings of many fellow artists by Chile's army, they took up residence in Italy, resulting in "the longest tour in history" for Inti-Illimani as they lived in de facto exile. They continued their efforts supporting Chilean democracy internationally; magnitizdat copies of their work continued to be widely distributed in Chile. In September 1988, days after they were no longer banned from Chile, they began touring Chile again. They helped organize the voting down of the referendum that would have re-elected Pinochet. Recently, they were actually supported by Chile as representatives of Chilean culture.
In the past the group was musically led by Horacio Salinas and politically led by Jorge Coulon. However, in 2001 there was a controversial split of the group, which started when three key members left the group (José Seves, Horacio Durán and Horacio Salinas). They were replaced by Manuel Meriño (from Entrama), Cristián González and Juan Flores. Due to the importance of departed members, many called into question the ability of the remainder to carry on the Inti-Illimani name. Meanwhile, the three departed members started their own group they call Inti-Histórico. From 2005 there are two groups:
Inti-Illimani New (Coulon brothers)
Inti-Illimani Histórico (José Seves, Horacio Durán and Horacio Salinas)

Larailailaila...

Larailala...
La mujer que yo más quiero
en la sangre tiene hiel,
me deja sin su plumaje
sabiendo que va a llover.
El árbol que yo más quiero
tiene dura la razón,
me priva su fina sombra
bajo los rayos del sol,
bajo los rayos del sol.
El rÃo que yo más quiero
no se quiere detener,
con el ruido de sus aguas
no escucha que tengo sed,
no escucha que tengo sed.
El cielo que yo más quiero
se ha comenzado a nublar,
mis ojos de nada sirven,
los mata la oscuridad,
los mata la oscuridad.
Sin abrigo, sin la sombra,
sin el agua, sin la luz,
sólo falta que un cuchillo
me prive de la salud,
me prive de la salud.
The opening lines of the song are repeated throughout and create a somber and almost hypnotic atmosphere. The lyrics speak to the pain and heartache that the singer experiences as a result of the people and things they love not necessarily reciprocating that love back. The first verse talks about a woman who the singer loves but who carries bitterness within her that poisons their relationship. Even though the singer knows it's going to rain (a metaphor for the impending trouble in their relationship), they are left without the comfort of the woman's presence. The second verse speaks of a tree that the singer loves, but which fails to provide shade during the heat of the day, leaving the singer exposed to the sun's rays. The third verse is about a river that the singer loves, but which continues to run without pause despite the singer's need for its water. The final verse shifts in tone slightly, addressing the sky instead of a person or object. The singer's eyes need it to see, but it is slowly being covered by clouds, leaving the singer in darkness. The final line of the song speaks to the fact that without the things that the singer loves, they are left vulnerable and in danger of being completely destroyed.
Overall, the song is a beautiful, melancholic exploration of the pain that we can feel when we love someone or something deeply, only to have that love not be returned. Each verse uses beautiful metaphors to paint a vivid picture, and the repetition of the opening lines creates a sense of unity throughout the song.

The woman I love the most is cruel and heartless
She leaves me vulnerable and exposed knowing that a storm is coming
The tree I love the most is stubborn and unyielding
It denies me the comfort of its shade under the scorching sun
The river I love the most refuses to stop
Amidst the noise of its endless flow, it fails to hear my thirst
The sky I love the most has started to darken
My eyes are useless, they are killed by the darkness
Without shelter, without shade, without water, without light
All that's left is for a knife to take away my health
