Overdrive
Invocation Array Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold to the touch, such a rush
Jettison, soaring on
Chemical city ways, remotes retain
Neon smoke on fire, where deckers stray

Selling time, echelons in overdrive
Fixing glitches now a runner's crime
Electric storms siphoned into every home
Every device and vessel feeding
Rise again new Rome

Echo mirage is chambered
Screen the field filled with cellular debris
In vocal dreams over lightwave screams
We do what we can, we're only machines

Everything is everyone's any time we want
We've become terminal undone
Lifelines measured in productivity
Their different shapes and heat all the same to me

Echo mirage is chambered
Screen the field filled with cellular debris
In vocal dreams over lightwave screams
We do what we can, we're only machines

Worldwide blackouts
The underground on the surface now, skinned
Over the net wherein

Body, traffic lines shunting dissolution to solution
We are the living virus, last resorts are first within

Echo mirage is chambered
Screen the field filled with cellular debris

In vocal dreams over lightwave screams
We do what we can, we're only machines

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Invocation Array's "Overdrive" paint a vivid picture of a dystopian future where technology has taken over society. The first stanza describes the sensation of being disconnected from reality and swept up in the fast-paced, chemical-fueled world of digital "Overdrive." The use of the word "Jettison" implies a sense of weightlessness, as if the singer is floating above the ground, lost in the neon-lit world around them. The following lines paint a picture of a society where people are consumed by their devices and the machines they control. The phrase "remotes retain" suggests a society in which people are constantly connected to their devices and that being constantly present is an expected norm. The final line of the first stanza, "where deckers stray," implies that there are people in this society who are not content to simply consume the mass media being fed to them by their devices, but instead seek out more subversive content.

The second stanza adds to this picture, describing a society that has become increasingly dependent on technology to the point where everything is interconnected. The lyric "Selling time, echelons in overdrive" suggests a society in which people are becoming more invested in their screens than in their physical surroundings. The next line, "fixing glitches now a runner's crime," implies that there is a class divide within this society, with some people being assigned to the task of maintaining the technology while others are able to live more freely. The line "electric storms siphoned into every home" suggests that the environmental conditions of this world have been sacrificed in service of the machines. The final two lines, "every device and vessel feeding/Rise again new Rome," paint a picture of a society that is constantly renewing itself technologically.

The chorus of the song, "We do what we can, we're only machines," reinforces the idea of a society in which people have become subsumed by their technology. The lines "Everything is everyone's any time we want/We've become terminal undone" suggest that society has lost its sense of agency and that people are no longer in control of their own lives.
