You’ll need multiple particle accelerators , not the big fancy ones just the regular kind. Then you find out where the servers that hold the data and the backup records for your bank account are. Look I don't mean to be mean or anything but this is exactly what's wrong with our generation. We watch a 20 minute video on particle physics and we think we know anything at all about particles physics. A small understanding of what was explained does not mean we understand it and this is apparent in everything we do because we're always telling people what things are without actually understanding the subject.

My company had an unexplained event like this some 20-25 years ago. The bottom valve of a chemical reactor opened prematurely dropping the batch from that reactor into the next reactor, ruining both batches. The investigation found no issues with hardware and software. Watching this video jogged my memory on that incident and now I truly believe it was caused by cosmic rays.

Just want to say that I absolutely love this channel, after getting out of school and feeling like questions I've had as a kid get shut down all the time amongst other things. Error correction is specified according to how many bit errors they can correct and how many bit errors they can detect.

Typically an error correction system that corrects n bitt errors will detect n+1 bit errors.

What you might be trying to say, and I am not sure because you haven't been clear in your response, is that ECC RAM corrects single bit errors and does not correct two bit errors. That is, n=1 but not 2.

Not quite. They're designated as Single Event Upsets since the effect of interaction is not permanent, the bitflip can be corrected. This is much more akin to a cosmic ray passing by passing by orbitofrontal cortex, getting your eyelids to blink on accident.

The vote total being off by a power of 2 (4096 == 2^12) is a dead giveaway to anyone familiar with how binary works. Then it is the process of elimination: assume it is a bug, either in your own code or that of the compiler, then you suspect hardware (faulty RAM or CPU module), and finally "cosmic rays".

You can't "prove" it was a cosmic ray after the fact, but once you eliminate all other possibilities then you are left with the last remaining possibility...

I've had a faulty RAM module before where it would bit-flip constantly leading to corruptions and BSOD -- that's why MemTest86 exists (to exhaustively test suspicious RAM modules).

A few months ago I was sitting at my computer desk when I suddenly got a blue screen. While I waited for it to restart I grabbed my phone and pressed the power button but it didn't turn on then it showed the power-on screen (normally you have to hold the button to restart it). Immediately I realized that since both my computer and phone had crashed simultaneously that it was most likely the result of radiation. Later that night there was a news story at the top of reddit that that day we experienced a particularly strong solar flare. It was wild, i detected a solar flare hours before the news cycle just by sitting at home on my ass 😂

The first time I heard this was in the 70s, during my programming practices. At that time we used punch cards to insert code, each card with a command. I inserted my cards into the card lector and the results were wrong. Me and my colleagues made a print and for hours we tried to find a coding mistake. One of my friends suggested to run the same code again and it worked. Later, we commented this to our professor and he said that possibly it was caused by a cosmic ray.

Finally someone talking about what I always thought could be the only explanation to things happened to me myself. And this also correlates perfectly to your recent entropy video, cause it matches to have a mechanism like this to increase chaos in the universe. A big picture puzzles together, however this time going backwards in time on YouTube. You have a good resilience about common thoughts and you do seem to somehow break through standard thinking patterns, explaining reality using an uninfluenced, neutral way of the minimum understanding capabilities of an open minded human being. I always thought the flash that happens sometimes when I go to sleep was because I was tired or some electrical error in the room lights. Never looked too deeply about it, just thought it was weird and made up some random solution about it and moved on. Back in the '80s I supervised operating system software for over 50 UNIX systems. So, bugs that might show up once a year in a single computer could surface once a week! And sometimes, I said at the time with no evidence, I was sure that cosmic rays would occasionally just flip bits. 🙂

Hours? This is the kind of thing that takes months to trace. I was once tasked with finding the root cause of a bug (PC program freezing after a few minutes of bored user moving dialog box around) that ended up taking Microsoft kernel developers working with CPU engineers at Intel to find. It was not cosmic rays. The BIOS didn't wasn't recognizing the CPU, so it wasn't applying the microcode patch to fix a known CPU erratum.

I began my career as a programmer in 1979. I remember computers that could correct for single bit memory errors in solid state memory. Couldn't correct for double bit memory errors since they masked each other. This on integrated circuits. Don't know if microchips and random access memory were ever able to do this.

I think what is more amazing than the particle itself, is that scientists were able to isolate it and discover that something that is so random and small and invisible was the reason of all of those problems!! This is so weird but years ago, a friend and I were working on a pose box for The Sims 2, which is a series of "poses" you can put sims in. She was coding live for me on her livestream page, I had made the poses and she was teaching me how to input them (I'm still bad at that part). You have to manually enter a bunch of fiddly numbers on multiples of 2, exactly like the voting machine... all done in a program called SimPE, over a gruelling hour or so. After all that work, for some reason the damn thing was NOT working. She couldn't figure it out, either. I had watched her do it, and as I went back in the recording and combing the video for any clues, I saw a value change from 01 to 00 after she came back to check it. We were absolutely blown away that it glitched on just the one integer. I don't know if this is evidence of that, but it seems similar? Ha. I don't have the recording anymore but I remember the "aha!" moment of noticing that she saved it and went back to the screen she just exited to double check, and missed that one value was suddenly different, recommitted the line, and moved on.

Excellent video! I am watching it for the second time now because it's so detailed and complete.
I would say, as a general rule:
- From the sun, it's the large scale clouds of particles that form the biggest danger, working like giant magnet that shifts the magnetic field on earth, cousing large scale damage (like to power grids).
- From the cosmos, it's the invidiual particles that influence individual electronics, like explained in the video.
Nevertheless, in my experience at least 99% of the cases where bits flip, it's just a question of faulty hardware. Like bad RAM, but it can also be a bad CPU (which is can also be extremely hard to prove, which is a problem here). I speak from my own experience here.

Just imagine, a black hole shoots a jet of near-light-speed particles in a random direction, one of these particles travels through space for billions of years, passes by stars, black holes, entire galaxies... and then it just sorta makes Mario teleport to a higher platform. The universe is such a weird an crazy place.

They should just store multiple copies of the vote totals in different memory locations.
Then, when votes are incremented, run a comparison between the different totals and look for discrepancies between the values.
It blows my mind that they just trust a single variable in memory to be a total source of truth for a number for such an important application as vote tallies, knowing that random bit flips can happen..

This reminds me of an incident back in 2017 or so. I was busy working on several of my devices all at once, when nearly every single one of them locked up.

All except of course for Phoenix, my dual-processor home server/workstation. It being built off of a decommissioned server motherboard meant of course that I had fully populated its 18 RAM slots with a total of 72gb of registered ECC memory. That computer of course just kept on trucking like nothing had happened.

You can experience the same effect of particles passing through your eyes or optic nerves by receiving radiation therapy to the head. The flashing kinda felt like it was slightly blue. And it also triggered my olfactory nerve and I got a real nasty smell.

I'd imagine that Cosmic Rays would cause bitflipping in the development and production of Quantum Computers. However, I'd also imagine that if a Superpositioned Bit gets flipped, it would be dubbed "Funky Bit" for just the sheer weirdness it would cause.

"Cosmic rays" has been a sysadmin joke for explaining system failure for about 30 years, and it's cool to have a video like this that actually explains what happens.

Actually, it's a joke about a reality. As a programming neophyte in 1980, I was quick to hear of a faculty member who had proved one of his programs had failed to run correctly when the program logic was correct. The machine was an IBM-360-type mainframe, and after the program proof, a bit flip at a certain point was demonstrated to cause the same failure. The faculty was well aware of cosmic rays and the many experiences NASA had been accumulating over years of flights, so there was no reticence about looking there. When a new computer science building was erected subsequently, it contained rather a lot of concrete, and the mainframe was located in a deep basement under a thick layer of it, in order to minimize its vulnerability to cosmic rays, reducing detectable quantities by a significant margin.

So for us students who had to produce working programs within a given number of tries, we had to meet a high bar to make such claims, and the joke was more about what would be required to submit a proof to the admins.

@Chris Kennedy they were ferrite beads wound on copper wires. The bits were programmed into the position of the bead itself. You can't use them to do any modern tasks. They were good for basic computing required in the 60s.

This actually had me thinking. Awesome video. Entertaining, informational, etc. We are people, we most likely are Who we are because a Big Sun Ray decided to flip the switch on some genetics, Birds have feathers instead of aerodynamic tails and wings because of genetics etc. I love stuff like this because im immune to existential crisis’, it just makes me Think more of how small we are as a being in this impossibly sized Universe, and just how lucky we are to get the bits flipped, that Got flipped, to make US humans, Who WE are.

One solution might be to run mission critical computation in tandem, two cores running every calculation, and comparing them. In the event of a mismatch, re-run and go with the majority. Obviously, this would make computing grossly less efficient.

We have experienced this in critical production reporting.
Difference was it was not just an integer but a floating point number, so less obvious and it took a very bright colleague to see that it was just a bit flip.

@StickGuy I mean, odds are that the environment was to blame and not a cosmic ray. But it is possible, yes. I’ve certainly had times when I was tempted to blame a cosmic ray for some weird behavior I couldn’t reproduce.

I heard a story (I can hardly remember) about someone on some space program appreciating that the spacecraft's software was in FORTH because of the very low level amendments and corrections they could make, and that this flexibility lead to a mission recovery.
I don't know how worthy or true this anecdote is, but I think that FORTH was/is wonderful for that.
OTOH I could never actually work in FORTH. God love it, but just no.

I experienced this flash a couple of times when I was going to sleep. I'm not sure if these really are particles hitting my nerve and not visuals of pre-dreaming (I can detect when my brain is falling asleep and these flashes definitely were a handful of minutes before that). But they were bright, like uncomfortably bright. If you just imagine the blank white color, it won't be flashy and you will know that this is not something that can be described as visual information you got via eyes. These flashes felt like flash of the camera or phone, and the uncomfortable feeling they cause reminds of looking at bright light from torch with eyes closed (not as intence as that, but still noticeble and weird)

I wonder if a space particle is why my gaming PC encountered a blue screen while just watching youtube. It had a blue screen saying something like "memory handling failed" or something. One of the binary numbers could've flipped, causing the error. It has never happened since.

Remember reading about how a loss 1 memory location aboard one of the voyager probes threatened its functionality. It had to be uploaded with new code circumventing that single location to continue. If a cosmic ray was culprit, that it hit a craft moving 1000's mph boggles the mind.

Don’t know if this would work during an actual problem with electronic throttle positioning, but best bet is if you have an automatic you probably could brake neutral, and if you have to kill the car but flip accessories on idk if some cars allow steering in accessory mode to quickly pull over?

Ok so, I was sitting at my office desk a while back, and this intensely blinding light hit my eyes for such a small fraction of a second that I almost thought I just imagined it. It as insanely bright for that short amount of time. Makes me wonder if it was a high energy particle.

I built a pc in 2020 that i leave running continuously 24/7 since 2020. This pc over its lifetime randomly experienced 3 bluescreens. Each had no identifiable cause. I remember the last one for example, I checked the windows logs. Everything about it seemed to elude to a possible cosmic ray. The error were hinting to one bit of memory that randomly got corrupted while the computer was operating, resulting in a BSOD. Even after doing tests on the ram, no malfunctioning bits were found, which does hint to the possibility that a random bit in memory has flipped during operation.

If the estimation of one bit per 256mb of memory per month is correct, then this mean my computer would be experiencing aproximately 500 bit flips per month with 128gb.

That would be a total of 18000 bit flips over the span of 3 years of operation. I can see why 18000 bits flipped over 3 years may have resulted in atleast one of thoses 3 BSODs. They may also be responsible for some app’s unexpected behavior or random crashes, if thoses bugs arent able to be replicated.
