I love this song so much and when he played it live on KEXP a tear came to my eye when he broke into that alto. You can catch that performance if you search for "Lion's Mane live KEXP" or it should be in the recommended section if you've been on an Iron & Wine Marathon like me!

That's my sister! Crying by the tree and at the bus stop. She had a friend who knew a "music artist". Turns out it was Sam. They met and he asked her to be in the video! She said Sam was a really nice guy.

Hmm, i think sam is trying to tell us that sometimes pride can get in the way of letting out your true feelings. 'love is the best sensation hiding in the lions mane' lion is a symble of pride. and how we're willing to do anything for that one person we do let into our hearts. 'so i'll clear the road the gravel and the thorn bush in your path' also he might be saying that we rush into relationships because we fear being alone. 'run like a race for family when you feel like youre alone'

this song is absolutley beautilful. i think this song is about love, and how its so hard sometimes. the lions mane is a metaphor about how when your in love your so close to danger, the danger being the lions mouth, but if you can get past it it is the best thing opn this earth. "and love is the best endeavor, waiting in the lions mane." genious. sam beam blows my mind

This song is breathtakingly beautiful. I love Iron & Wine. This was the first song I heard of them, back in the Myspace days. It introduced me to a whole style of music I was completely unfamiliar with. Ever since I've been in love with his music. If you like this song, you should listen to Mignonne by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. So sad and dreamy and beautiful...

The songs meaning to me was more along the lines of feeling so safe and comforted in the lions mane yet you are are so close to a powerful predators deadly jaws. Similar to what calihan was saying but oh so different

Also, to add to the lyrical interpretation; just saying how misleading, mysterious, difficult, and beautiful love can be. This was the first song I learned to play on guitar. Love the finger picking, simple and sounds amazing. :)

I love this song...It's so peaceful, the lyrics clearly exemplify the way love really is...I took the whole basis of lyrics as a sort of feeling that you would get talking to your past lover, after your whole relationship fell apart, and you both really care for each other and wish you could go back to the time where you were together and happy...a sort of "I don't know what to say...I'm so sorry, for everything. I wish we could go back to then..." Anyways...Iron & Wine is an amazing artist.

This song is not about the difficulties in life, but about how we have lost intimacy and personal contact in love. Love is the lion, and we must reach into it's mane, right next to it's jaws, in order to find it. Truth is, some of us can't do it. Let's face it, trust and intimacy are scary, especially when we can't control the lion.

i dunno. it seemed pretty obvious to me, but i don't know if i'm right. the song's about love so.. i think each of those images carry love within them. they're all images of.. love. you know, human love, what love actually means in humans and how it is present everywhere, in the tiniest of things and expressions there can be love. hope that makes sense :)

My mother asked me one time what I thought love was and how I loved her , I said pure love is suffering and sacrifice. She asked me if I loved her like that and why? I think when he refers to "the lions mane" he's simply saying that love is worth protecting like the lion's mane is used to protect it from when he fights against other animals and lions. i think that people's interpretation of a child works good here. So in other words, he'd protect his child the way that a lion would protect itself or its family from an attack.

But love to him, doesn't just stop at a child,he's speaking of love in general. Love for a significant other, or a relative, or a friend. But love as love for a child is about the most sacred that we can come to relate to... so just to think that a strength of a lion just to protect something so sacred as a child, meaning love, that is profound. So two symbolisms here as that of a baby and a lion combining... its almost as if he's describing Heaven here, (the lion and the lamb). I think what he's trying to say here is that love is about the most enlightened you could ever be when you feel it. Pure love is true spirituality.

When people talk about something, we tend to expect something extremely special and uniqute. Iron & Wine, which is by the way one man's work, is subtly so. Don't think less of it because of your expectations. Sam Beam will blow your mind if you let him.

Respond to this video... Beautiful understanding of the Lion metaphor, however I think you are forgetting that the Lions mane is actually refering to Samuels wicked beard. Imagine reaching into that! who knows what you would find... some say another guitar, others say Jesus lives in there.
