Lovers' Revolution
Iron & Wine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I came to you, and you to me
And we were tapping on the window of the children when the piggy-bank broke
Pitching quite a fifth
But how the makers of the medicine will always say you're looking sick

I came to you, and you to me
And we would wear up to the women washing in the form of white gloves
But the funny thing was how in in god and
His people were dreaming about the wilds to leave
And all the fingers that we damaged when all we wanted was a diamond ring

I came to you (I came to you) , and you to me (and you to me)
And we were barking at the drug dogs, blood-dried-black on their hands
Never realized,
You never tussle with a giant till you can hit him right between the eyes
That no matter how we chose 'em we'll be chocking on the compromised
'Cause all the jaws, all the claws, they're restless by the riverside
And it was a muscle and a shadow that was shoving us into the light

I came to you, and you to me
And we were snatching out a poor baby's bottle just to trade it for change
But now it's come to pass
The every eye beneath the mountains saw the smoke and no one heard the blast
And no one knew the arm was broken, tho everybody signed the cast
Until the compliment was good she said man I thought you'd never ask
And when the world wore out their welcome they just booked up for a bag of grass
But when she cried on the grounds we were sucking all the laughing gas
And when the hat had left the body not a flag was hanging on us

I came to you, and you to me
And then we lost our own lovers revolution but then it all started again
Now we're one

One of the parade wailing widows walking home into the setting sun
One of the soldiers lost, and then dreams and never lose their gun
One of the wise-men wondered onto the podium without a tongue
One of the trophies' corners by the mess we made of being young
One of the wrayers, one of the promises swallowed without chewing gum
One of the deaf ear's dumber all of the time for all the years of drums
One of the wide-eyed soap boxes buried under washing time
One of the bee-cops combing every sidewalk-crack for love

One of the crowded stars uncounted when the math was done
One of the weather in the garden left to wonder when the rain will come

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Lovers’ Revolution” by Iron & Wine are deeply poetic and difficult to parse out on first listen. In essence, the song seems to be commenting on the universal human experience of trying to make a better life for oneself, while being thwarted by external forces beyond one's control. The first stanza describes how the couple in the song works hard to save up money, but the "makers of the medicine" always find a reason to siphon it away, leaving them feeling sickly and vulnerable. In the second verse, the couple tries to dress themselves up and join polite society, but they find that everyone else is dreaming of escaping to the "wilds." The third verse is the most abstract, describing a world where "jaws" and "claws" are always waiting to pounce, and where no matter how careful one is, compromise is inevitable. The final verse seems to bring all these threads together, suggesting that despite all the difficulties, one can still find a sense of unity and common purpose with others.

One of the most interesting elements of this song is the way that it blends Americana and indie rock influences. The fingerpicking guitar style, evocative poetic lyrics, and hushed vocal delivery are all hallmarks of the folk revival movement, which sounds like it could be from any time in the past century. At the same time, the song's melancholy tone, use of electric guitar, and occasional use of distorted sound effects are all forward-looking touches that set it apart from conventional folk music. Other fascinating aspects of "Lovers' Revolution" include the haunting, almost dreamlike quality of the production; the use of unconventional and unexpected metaphors (such as comparing society to a piggy bank); and the way that the lyrics seem to tell a story without ever spelling everything out for the listener.

Chords: F e|---1---| DM7 e|---0---| Am e|---1---| C e|---0---| D e|---2---| These chords repeat throughout the song.

I came to you and you to me
And we were tapping on the window at the children when the piggy bank broke
Pitching quite a fit
About how the makers of the medicine will always say you’re looking sick

I came to you and you to me
And we would whimper to the women washing milk off of their formal white clothes
But the funny thing
Was how when God was in his people we were dreaming about who else to be
And all the fingers that we damaged when all we wanted was a diamond ring

I came to you (came to you) and you to me (came to me)
And we were barking at the drug dogs, blood dried black on their hands
And never realized
You never tussle with a giant til you can hit him right between the eyes
(I came to you, I came to you)
And that no matter how we chewed it, we’d be choking on a compromise
(I came to you, I came to you)
Cause all the jaws, all the claws lay restless by the riverside
(I came to you, I came to you)
And it wasn’t muscle in the shadow that was shoving us into the light

I came to you and you to me
And we were snatching at a war baby’s bottle just to trade it for change
But now it’s come to pass
That every eye beneath the mountain saw the smoke but no one heard the blast
That no one knew the arm was broken although everybody signed the cast
And until the government was good, she said “Man, I thought you’d never ask”
And when love wore out her welcome, they just booked her for a bag of grass
That while she cried on the cross, we were sucking on the laughing gas
And when the head had left the body, not a flag was hanging half-mast

(I came to you, I came to you)
I came to you and you to me
And then we lost our own lovers’ revolution but it started again
And now we’re one
One of the parade wake widows walking home into the setting sun
One of the soldiers lost in the dreams that never lose the gun
(I came to you, I came to you)
One of the wise men wandering the podium without a tongue
One of the trophies tarnished by the mess we made of being young
(I came to you, I came to you)
One of the prayers, one of the promises swallowed with our chewing gum
One of the deaf ears, dumber all the time for all the years of drums
(I came to you, I came to you)
One of the wide-eyed soap boxes buried under Washington
One of the beat cops combing every sidewalk crack for love
(I came to you, I came to you)
One of the crowded stars uncounted when the map was done
One of the withered in the garden left to wonder when the rain will come
