Cross-Eyed Mary
Iron Maiden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who would be a poor man, a beggar man, a thief
If he had a rich man in his hands?
And who would steal the candy from a laughing baby's mouth
If he could take it from the money man?

Cross-eyed Mary goes jumping in again
She signs no contracts but she always plays it clean
She dines in Hampstead Village
On expense accounted gruel
And the jack knife barber drops her off at school

Laughing in the playground gets no kicks from little boys
Would rather make it with a letching gray
Or maybe her attention is drawn by Aqualung
Who watches through the railings as they play

Cross-eyed Mary finds it hard to get along
a poor man's rich girl
And she'll do it for a song
a rich man's stealer
But her favor's good and strong
She's the Robin Hood of High Gate
Let the poor man get along

Laughing in the playground gets no kick from little boys
Would rather make it with a letching gray
Or maybe her attention is drawn by Aqualung
Who watches through the railings as they play

Cross-eyed Mary goes jumping in again
She signs no contracts but she always plays it clean
She dines in Hampstead Village
On expense accounted gruel
And the jack knife barber drops her off at school

Cross-eyed Mary

Oh, Mary

Oh, Cross-eyed Mary

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Iron Maiden's song Cross-Eyed Mary depict a character named Mary, who is poor and has resorted to prostitution to make ends meet. The song describes how Mary always manages to maintain her dignity and integrity despite her situation. The lyrics also suggest that Mary has a preference for older men and is drawn to Aqualung, another character in the song who is watching her play in the playground. Mary is depicted as being resourceful and cunning, able to manipulate those around her, including both rich and poor men.

The song's title is borrowed from Jethro Tull's 1971 song of the same name. Iron Maiden's version of the song was released on their 1983 album Piece of Mind. The song has been described as a classic example of the band's early sound, featuring catchy riffs, driving rhythms and semi-operatic vocals.

Been almost 40 years since I last heard this kick ass Maiden cover. Nico and Bruce at their prime. Up the Irons!!

Maiden has an epic catalogue, but something about the Piece of Mind production slays all of it. To me this and the whole album is the perfect Maiden.

Maybe because it was the first Iron Maiden I heard back in 1985, but I agree with your sentiment.

Jimmy Running Dog

I think it's the sound of the rhythm guitars that creates the production difference that you're talking about.

DETH ANGEL

Cross eyed Mary is a masterpiece , no matter Who covers it.

Zack Higgins

I think if Justin Beiber covered this song I'd kill myself

Timothy Taylor

Totally agree

@Scott Ashe Kirk isn't good enough on guitar and James wouldn't be able to make the vocals as he has only 1 flat tone and can't hold it very long.. Can't have been very good attempt and probably why noone has uploaded it
