The Fugitive
Iron Maiden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As frost lay on the ground
Waiting to make my move
I make no sound
Waiting for the mist to cover all around
I carefully picked my time
Then took the wall
I'm sick and tired of running
The hunger and the pain
A stop to look about then off again
Being at the wrong place
And at the wrong time
Suspected of a hit that was my crime
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
Always looking 'round me
Forever looking back
I'll always be a target for attack
Ever moving onwards
Always on the run
Waiting for the sight of a loaded gun
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
Even if I find them
And get to clear my name
I know that things can never
Be the same
But if I ever prove
My innocence some day
I've got to get them all to make them pay
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
I am a fugitive being hunted down like game
I am a fugitive but I've got to clear my name
The lyrics of Iron Maiden's song The Fugitive narrate the story of an innocent man on the run, who is trying to escape the authorities hunting him down, after being suspected of a hit that he didn't commit. The lyrics paint the man's intense emotional and physical struggle as he is constantly moving forward, constantly looking back, always on the run, and waiting for the sight of a loaded gun. He is sick and tired of the hunger and the pain, but he has no other choice than to keep running as he is being hunted down like game. He is determined to clear his name, and if he ever proves his innocence, he plans to not only clear his name but also make those who wrongly accused him pay.
Through its powerful and emotional lyrics, The Fugitive describes the feeling of alienation and the pressure of society on people who have been framed or wrongly accused. The song highlights the emotional and mental toll that such situations can have on innocent people, who are forced to run and constantly look over their shoulder, while trying to clear their names and restore their reputation.
