As pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal movement, Iron Maiden achieved initial success during the early 1980s. After several lineup changes, the band went on to release a series of UK and US Platinum and Gold albums, including 1980's eponymous debut album, 1981's Killers, 1982's The Number of the Beast, 1983's Piece of Mind, 1984's Powerslave, 1985's live release Live After Death, 1986's Somewhere in Time, 1988's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, 1990's No Prayer for the Dying and 1992's Fear of the Dark. In 1982, the band released The Number of the Beast – its first album with Bruce Dickinson, who replaced Paul Di'Anno as lead singer – which was a turning point in their career, helping establish them as one of heavy metal's most important artists. Take the wrong way out running out of breath
Meet my match in the afterlife
Suppress the demons that plague the night
A tortured mind is a safe place to go
But the truth lurks down in the dark below
Step inside my inquisitive mind
Are you scared at what you just might find
See myself in the hall of mirrors
A different shape every step I take
A different mind every step of the line
But in the end they are all mine
Laughing sorrow inside your head
Can't get out just a feeling of dread
I know this burden's a heavy load
A dark mistake never ending road
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
The black jack king and the red queen clash
The artful dodger he counts his stash
The joker's wild like an impish child
While madame fortune she waits inside
The good luck charm is overkill
The tired old soldier says fire at will
Planes overhead go search destroy
The ones below human decoy
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
I need somebody to save me
Meanwhile we play the waiting game
The clock is struck the horse is lame
And when we think that this is done
Chance your luck a four leafed one
You hedge your bets the battle lost
To wait in vain and count the cost
The thin edged line
Between good and bad
And cast the luck be happy sad
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
I need somebody to save me
The red and the black
People don't want the truth
Look in their eyes and you send them away
The red and the black
Fate and hypocrisy
Burden's a heavy load there is no doubt
The red and the black
All out of luck again
How many chances can anyone have
The red and the black
Treachery out to win
There in the wrong place and at the wrong time
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
I need somebody to save me
The song "The Red and the Black" by Iron Maiden explores the concept of life and death. The persona in the song suggests that it is better to suffer internally than to face the truth that lies beneath the surface. The lyrics "A tortured mind is a safe place to go, but the truth lurks down in the dark below" express this idea. The persona also implies that facing one's own demons and fears in life is essential to suppress the demons that haunt us in the afterlife. The line "Suppress the demons that plague the night" reflects this idea.
The second verse of the song refers to chance and luck, exploring the idea of fate and hypocrisy. The persona challenges the concept of good and bad luck, suggesting that in life, there is a thin line dividing the two. The line "The thin edged line, between good and bad, and cast the luck be happy sad" embodies this concept. The persona also expresses frustration at being out of luck repeatedly, suggesting that everyone only has a limited number of chances to succeed before they run out of luck. The line "How many chances can anyone have" reflects this sentiment.
Overall, the song explores the idea that life is a game of chance, and one must face their fears and challenges head-on to suppress their demons and become successful.

Am a Maiden fan since 1983 and this is why they are the best band in the world. After forty years together, they produce this amazing album like every one previous!! Thank god i found Iron Maiden at such a young age. I was seven in 1983 when i got Piece of mind on cassette. Nearly thirty six years later, i'm still listening to Maiden every day non stop !!
