Wasted Years
Iron Maiden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From the coast of gold
Across the seven seas
I'm traveling on
Far and wide
But now it seems, I'm just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do, it isn't me but someone else

I close my eyes
And think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain't it funny how it is?
You never miss it 'til it's gone away
And my heart is lying there
And will be 'til my dying day

So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands
I got you on my mind
Can't ease this pain so easily
When you can't find the words to say
It's hard to make it through another day
And it makes me wanna cry
And throw my hands up to the sky

So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years

Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

Overall Meaning

In the song Wasted Years by Iron Maiden, the singer is a traveler who has journeyed far and wide across the seven seas. However, despite seeing many sights and visiting numerous places, he feels like a stranger to himself. He sometimes does things that he doesn’t recognize as himself. In the chorus, the singer advises listeners not to waste their time always searching for those wasted years. Instead, they should realize that they are living in the golden years and make their stand.

The lyrics highlight the importance of living in the moment and taking advantage of the time we have. The singer reminisces about his home and how he misses it now that he’s gone. He finds it amusing how one can never appreciate home until it’s gone. In the second stanza, the singer expresses his feelings for someone he loves. He cannot find the words to say to them and it’s hard to make it through the day without them. He wishes he could cry and throw his hands up to the sky to release the pain he’s feeling.

“The ones who don’t make it to heaven did not realize I am the love of their life and they are the love of mine.” -Jesus

“In the places you have looked for me, you won’t find me.”

His love for us individually:
Psalms 139:
17How amazing are your thoughts concerning me, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand on the sea—

He has an appointment with us every morning:

Job 7
17“What is mankind that you make so much of them,
that you give them so much attention,
18that you examine them every morning
and test them every moment?

Jesus created us, we are his Masterpiece:

Colossians 1
The Supremacy of the Son of God

15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

I was surprised he knew me individually:

Psalms 139
13For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

Acts 17
26From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28‘For in him we live and move and have our being.

The Bible says God hands us our every breath. As long as we are alive, he is longing for us to turn back to him, we are his child, the joy of his life. He is the Embodiment of Love. He has one need and that is to love. Our reason for being. Our sole purpose in life is to find him. To remember him. He is the love of our life and we are the love of his. He gives us infinite chances to come back to him in this life because he unconditionally loves us, way beyond even the love our parents feel for us.
Take the bate he gives you. Do not reject him. Try him.
“He is wooing you from the jaws of distress (demons, hell, eternal horror and fear, separation from God and his attributes) into a spacious place, free of restriction.”

“When you’ve tried everything else, try me.” —God

He is not against anyone of us:

Ezekiel 18
21“But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 22None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

Joel 2
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave behind a blessing.

Isaiah 30:18
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion…
How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you.

Psalms 139
4Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.

A month ago, Jesus gave me the most precious gift I could ever ask for. It was a vision of himself watching me with his loving eyes on me. He looked over at me from where he was sitting in a chair with the most loving caring smile, like he had always been watching me…even before I came to know him. Even more than fatherly, it was a motherly kind of love, not as if to say “what are you doing today?” but “how are you doing?” He really cared about me like my own mother would, I was surprised to see that kind of love. I knew immediately that’s how he watched everyone, with the care of both a father and a mother. He smiled and without moving his mouth, I heard him say “I will never leave you.”

A few days later, I had two repeated dreams of that vision, and I heard this verse immediately after it both times:

Psalms 32
8I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Jesus wants to pour out his heart to us:

Proverbs 1
23If you had repented at my rebuke, then surely I would have poured out my thoughts to you; I would have made my teachings known to you.

Psalms 25
14The Lord confides in those who fear him.

Amos 4 He reveals his thoughts to mankind.

Jeremiah 33:3
‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

Isaiah 45
I would not have told the people of Israel to seek me, if I could not be found.

Jeremiah 29
11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 10:23 23Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.

Psalms 37 4Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this.

Matthew 6:8 Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

These verses really helped me move my fear/respect/need for attention away from humans and over to God:

Isaiah 2 22Stop trusting in mere humans,
who have but a breath in their nostrils.
Why hold them in esteem?

Mathew 10 28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 8
13To fear the Lord is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.

psalms 86
5You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.

Jeremiah 33:9
They will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide.

1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Psalms 53
2God looks down from heaven
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.

1 Chronicles 28
Acknowledge the God of your fathers, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 10Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you!

When we sin, we partner with demons. When we’ve given into them and been a slave to them in this life, they own us for eternity. In eternity, we are on their turf in their kingdom—outside of God’s protection. They hate us. Torture is their game. Torture did not originate with man, but demons. Do not partner with the demon of lust, demon of anger, demon of addiction…etc. These are not just innocent temptations we all have; anyone who has had sleep paralysis has briefly met the demon/s that will own them forever. God uses dreams to warn us:

Job 33
14For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it.
15In a dream, in a vision of the night,
when deep sleep falls on people
as they slumber in their beds,
16he may speak in their ears
and terrify them with warnings,
17to turn them from wrongdoing
and keep them from pride,
18to preserve them from the pit,
their lives from perishing by the sword.
……..29“God does all these things to a person—
twice, even three times—
30to turn them back from the pit,
that the light of life may shine on them.

James 4
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you.

It was so easy to see other’s faults but never my own.
psalms 19
12But who can discern their own errors?

We are always on his mind, he cares and thinks about us continually, as a Father cares about his child.

Jeremiah 12:3
3Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test my thoughts about you.

If you want to know God, all you have to do is ask Him.

Great days lie ahead!
Much love,
Amy
