Marie
Irving Berlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse:]
There's a gleam in your eyes, Marie
And the meaning is plain to see
But you'll find romance is a game of chance
That is not all it seems to be
[Refrain:]
Marie, the dawn is breaking
Marie, you'll soon be waking
To find your heart is aching
And tears will fall as you recall
The moon in all its splendor
The kiss so very tender

The words, "Will you surrender
To me, Marie?"

Overall Meaning

The song Marie, written by Irving Berlin, is a sad and cautionary tale of a woman named Marie. The verse talks about the gleam in her eyes, which easily indicates her love and the hope of a romantic relationship. The lyrics also point out, however, that love is a game of chance that is not always what it seems to be. In the refrain, the song talks about the dawn breaking, and Marie waking up to the realization that her heart is aching. She is overwhelmed by the memories of the moon's splendor and the tender kiss, and the words asking her to surrender to the person who has now broken her heart.

The song is a warning to Marie, cautioning her about blindly following her romantic desires. It speaks to the unpredictable nature of love, and how it can cause people to experience both joy and heartbreak. It teaches that it is essential to be careful and take things slow in a romantic relationship. As much as there is a gleam in Marie's eyes, she needs to be prepared in case things don't go as planned.

The 1940 Rhythm Nightclub fire (Natchez, MS) brought me here. Walter Barnes had his band play this song to calm the crowd as the building burned around them. Morbid comment, but as a musician I find facts like this very interesting. You gotta respect guys who literally play until they die (Walter Barnes and 9 bandmates did that night)!
