Berlin, who was Jewish, was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both lyrics and music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond a rudimentary level, he composed over 3,000 songs. Many of his songs, including "God Bless America", "White Christmas", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", and "There's No Business Like Show Business," left an indelible mark on American music and culture. He produced 17 film scores and 21 Broadway scores, in addition to his individual songs.
Sisters
Irving Berlin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There were never such devoted sisters,
Never had to have a chaperone, no sir,
I'm there to keep my eye on her
Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrived from rome
She wore the dress, and I stayed home
The same in the rain and sun
Two different faces, but in tight places
We think and we act as one
Those who've seen us
Know that not a thing could come between us
Many men have tried to split us up, but no one can
Lord help the mister who comes between me and my sister
And lord help the sister, who comes between me and my man
The song "Sisters" by Irving Berlin talks about the bond between two sisters who are extremely devoted to each other. The first stanza talks about how they have never needed a chaperone as one is always keeping an eye on the other. The second stanza talks about how they share and care for everything, right down to what they wear. When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome, one sister wore the dress, and the other stayed at home. The third stanza talks about how they stick together in all kinds of weather and in tight places, they act as one. The final stanza talks about how their bond is unbreakable, many men have tried to come between them but none could do so. The lyrics end with the warning that anyone who tries to come between them will face their wrath.

A classic! What I love most about Betty and Judy is that they DON’T fall into the typical tropes seen with sisters in the media. For instance, Judy knows that Betty is the more talented singer and, instead of being envious, actively encourages her to pursue that career. They also don’t fight over men and genuinely look out for one another throughout the whole movie. Truly, there were never such devoted sisters! ;p

Right! My Sisters took my Name out of my Parents Will. I won and they truly lost. Funny, they thought because our parents passed, that they were Dead? Like Jesus, they live on and they saw what they did or No what they tried to do! Sisters! But I love Betty & Judy! Watch this every year!

My sister Kathie and I had an "act" based on this. We would force all our kids to sit on the floor and watch us sing and dance to this....how lovely to happen across this, and the memory.
