Blue Skies
Irving Berlin and Fritz Kreisler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue skies smiling at me,
Nothing but blue skies do I see.
Blue birds singing a song,
Nothing but blue birds all day long.

Never saw the sun shining so bright.
Never saw things go oh so right.
Noticing the days hurrying by.
When you're in love, my my how they fly.
Blue days, all of them gone.
Nothing but blue skies from now on.

Blue skies smiling at me.
Nothing but blue skies do I see.
Blue bird singing a song.
Nothing but blue birds all day long.

Never saw the sun shining so bright.
Never saw things go oh so right.
Dig those days hurrying by.
When you're in love, my my how they fly.
Blue days, all of them gone.

Nothing but blue skies from now on.
Nothing but blue skies from now on.

Music is music, you can play it different ways — this is vintage Kreisler. But the lyrics are definitely happy.

The violin in this song make's it sound very calm. It reminds of a score for a film because the very last notes sound like the ending of a scene.

This melancholic version of the irving berlin song could serve as a soundtrack for a CHARLIE CHAPLIN silent film.

Billy

Very beautifully on violin.

Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" may just be the happiest and most thought-provoking song of the 20th century.

Since the early thirties, if not before, this song has generally been performed in a very up-beat way, but the original score, with its melancholy, chromatic bass, has always suggested to me that a slower, more mournful or rueful song was intended by the composer.

@priscianusjr I agree.

Actually Irving Berlin wrote this when he was inspired by the birth of his daughter. The song was meant to be completely optimistic. It's still one of the greatest melodies ever regardless though.

+William S. Me too! I always thought of this as being a beautifully melancholy love song, especially with the minor notes. It reminds me of someone looking back on cherished memories with a pang of sadness. All memories, even happy ones, tend to bring on a sense of sorrow, since once they're over, we're forced to look back at them as an outsider. This is one of those captivating songs that makes me want to smile and cry at the same time. Such a masterpiece!
