Fare Thee Well
Isaac Oscar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I had wings like Noah's dove
I'd fly the river to the one I love
Oh fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

Well, I had a man, who was long and tall
He moved his body like a cannon ball
Oh fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well
I remember one evening in the pouring rain
And in my heart was an achin' pain
Oh fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

Muddy river was muddy and wild
Can't give a bloody for my unborn child
Fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

So show us a bird flying high above
Life ain't worth living without the one you love

Oh fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well
And fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

Overall Meaning

Isaac Oscar's song Fare Thee Well is a soulful and melancholic ballad about a woman who is reminiscing about past love and thinking about what could have been. The opening line, "If I had wings like Noah's dove, I'd fly the river to the one I love" immediately invokes a sense of yearning and longing. The woman dreams of having wings so she can fly to be with the one she loves, suggesting that they are physically apart or perhaps the love is unrequited. The chorus line, "Oh fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well" repeats throughout the song, indicating that the woman is saying goodbye to someone, whether it be her lover or a part of herself that she has lost along the way.

The second verse describes the woman's former lover, who is tall and moves like a cannonball, conjuring up images of strength, power and motion. The juxtaposition between the verse about her former lover and the chorus about saying farewell suggests a breakup or tragedy that led to their separation. The bridge describes a specific memory, "I remember one evening in the pouring rain and in my heart was an achin' pain." The setting and the ache in her heart suggests a tragic ending or a sense of loss.

The final verse brings up the imagery of the muddy river, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the uncertainty and chaos of life. The woman's unborn child is mentioned, which adds another layer of sadness and loss to the song. The final line, "Life ain't worth living without the one you love" summarizes the message of the song - that love is what gives life meaning and purpose.

Man I remember listening to this song back in 2014, that's when I discovered it. I was a freshman in high school, a very quiet kid for sure who really had no idea what's in front of him. And now 7 years later, to look back on this, it brings so many memories at the same time that I feel puzzled, yet I feel so nostalgic and kind of weird, to think of myself from that time, and look at myself now. I know this is an overused phrase but really - time fricking flies, real fast. Cherish every moment, feel every moment the way you feel this song, just live man. Whoever reads this I hope you have a great day, and no matter what is going on in your life, don't look down, keep moving forward and keep living. Life is an adventure for sure.

@IdioticSynergy

Same here Mate. Nostalgia is a bitch ain't it? I used to listen to this song all the time in high school

@luodansixiang Just found this today after looking for a similar, sadder song I know from the Revolutionary War tv show, Turn: Washington's Spies. I go back to that one once every so often, and I guess I found another good one too. Interesting you say you were a freshman in 2014 bc I was too, we must be more or less the same age, but I still don't know what's in front of me haha. I do know though that some kind of solar EMP disaster will happen to the whole earth soon, so I guess that explains why I've never really known what I wanted to do with my life lol. Sorry I haven't any other way to say this, I just wanted to tell someone at least to try to save one life, as crazy as I sound here. Go ahead and call bullshit if you want, but I just wanted to tell you that bc it's cool to find another mature zoomer my age haha. I hope you survive it and find peace and the truth. I used to disregard doomsday preppers until I learned about Agenda 2030 four years ago among other things, let alone Covid following afterward and next being this EMP, it has all weighed heavily on my heart because I can't find evidence to refute it. I wish I was speaking nonsense, and I'm sorry I don't have the link with me, but please search The Earth Disaster Documentary by the channel Suspicious Observers. You have every right to know what's going on, I can tell you deserve to survive this (not like I'm the one calling the shots lol) and pass on that wisdom. I pray you'll find a way to keep your friends and family safe! Godspeed, dude, farewell!

@LadyTylerBioRodriguez

My mother bought the soundtrack for Easter. Played that every day on the way to school. Lost her a few years back. Musics still good almost ten years later.
